Splatoon ( Japanese title: スプラトゥーン , Supuratūn ) is a third-person shooter that of Nintendo developed and published exclusively for the Wii U was released. It was released in Japan on May 28, 2015, and in Europe , Australia, and the United States in the following days .

Splatoon differs from other third-person shooters in that it fires ink (or paint) instead of projectiles. The player, who belongs to the fictional type of Inklinge, is also given the opportunity to transform into an octopus, which enables him to slide in color faster, even vertically. In Splatoon's online multiplayer mode, it's up to you to paint the field with your team's paint. The team that could cover more ground with its color wins. In addition to this game mode, there are also ranked games, which are strategically more demanding and require certain zones, which are marked on the map, or a movable tower to be controlled. The game also includes a single player campaign in which the fight against the so-called Octarians is the main task, and a local multiplayer mode for two players called "Duel Dojo", in which the task is to hit more balloons on a field than the opponent to destroy.

The game is regularly expanded with additional content such as maps, game modes and weapons for free. On August 6, 2015, a large free DLC was released in which more modes and equipment were added.

"Splatoon" is a suitcase word from the English words splat , platoon and toon . Splat means something like “splash, splash”, a platoon in the USA describes a military unit of around 40 soldiers, “toon” is the short form of cartoon and refers to the colorful and sometimes comic-like look of the game.

At The Game Awards 2015 the game won in the categories "Best Shooter" and "Best Multiplayer". In 2016 the game also won the German computer game award in the "Best International Multiplayer Game" category.

Gameplay

Game modes

Local multiplayer mode

The local multiplayer mode takes place in the Duel Dojo of the main menu and can be played between two players. The goal of the game mode is to destroy most of the balloons within a playing field while the other person is trying to do the same. Mutual destruction is also possible here. One player plays with the tablet controller and the other with a joypad on the large screen.

Online multiplayer mode

The online multiplayer mode is divided into two categories, standard combat and ranked combat . Both categories are subject to a rotation of two fields that change every four hours. The standard battle contains only one type of battle, the turf battles , whereby the rank battle currently has three types of battle, which can be played alternately every four hours: The rule , the tower command and the operation goldfish .

The standard fights are informal fights where players can only win experience points and money. It is also possible to connect with someone from your friends list so that you can take part in a regular fight together. The turf fights held here are three-minute fights in which the goal is to spray the field with the color of your team. The team whose color covers more of the playing field when the time limit expires wins.

  • In the domination mode , which was unlocked when the ranked battle mode was released, the aim is to gain control of one or more certain areas of the playing field. This is achieved by covering most of the area with your own color for a certain period of time. As soon as you have control over all areas, a count of one hundred ticks down. The team whose count has ticked down to 0 or the team that has the lowest count after the time limit of five minutes wins. If the opponent gains control after you have owned it yourself, the time in which you had it is counted as penalty seconds, which must first expire before the actual counter can be counted when the area or areas are conquered again runs down. If, after the time limit has expired, the team behind is in control, there is an extension that either lasts until the team's counter has fallen below that of the other team or until the control has been dissolved by the other team.
  • In the tower command submitted on July 2, 2015, however, a tower can be found in the middle of the playing field, which must be transported to a certain point in the opponent's base. To do this, at least one player must stand on the tower so that the tower moves on a predefined line in the direction of the enemy base. If nobody stands on the tower for a short time, it will move back towards the center by itself. If no team is able to move the tower into the opponent's base within the five-minute time limit, the team that maneuvered the tower farthest towards the opponent's base during the game wins.
  • In the Operation Goldfish mode , which was added to the game on August 15, 2015, both teams fight for the so-called goldfish cannon, which is located in the middle of the field at the beginning of the round. The task of the teams is to get the cannon to a point in the enemy base by the time limit of five minutes. However, the cannon is initially protected with a barrier, which must first be broken by a team with their ink. The barrier explodes in the color of the team that it has broken through, after which any player can pick it up and shoot long-range colored projectiles. If the player who carries the cannon is killed or does not bring the cannon to the target within 60 seconds, he drops the cannon, which then gets a barrier again.

In addition, you have the option of creating private battles in which you can select all fields and all game modes regardless of the given map selection. In addition, eight players are not required, so one-on-one or two-on-two fights are also possible.

Single player campaign

In the single player mode, the player goes through several levels with a given weapon, which can be reinforced by collecting objects. The goal of the levels is to overcome various opponents and obstacles in order to reach an object at the end of the level. In addition, a scroll is hidden in each of the 27 regular levels, which contains background information on the plot.

After the player has mastered the levels of an entire area, he faces a final boss in a fight to unlock the next area. In addition, defeating a boss unlocks new weapons for online multiplayer mode.

equipment

weapons

There are different types of weapons in the game, with each of the 80 available weapon sets always having a primary weapon, a secondary weapon and a special weapon. These cannot be freely combined with each other, but must be purchased in a special shop as a weapon set, so that when buying a primary weapon, the associated secondary and special weapon is mandatory. The weapon sets purchased in the store can only be used in online multiplayer mode. Weapon sets are regularly submitted via free updates.

The primary weapon is the weapon that the player uses to distribute the most paint. Most weapons belong to these different types:

  • Blotch : Normal firearms that have a relatively high rate of fire.
  • Concentrators : weapons that resemble snipers . These have a very high firing power, but have to be charged, which means they have a very low rate of fire.
  • Blob Roller : Guns that resemble a paint roller . The paint can be applied to the floor while running or spread by spraying the roller.
  • Blaster : Weapons that fire a strong, exploding paint ball as a shot at a low rate of fire, severely damaging the enemy.
  • Quasto : weapons that resemble a paintbrush . You can move around quickly with them and quickly “wave” the brush in close combat at short range.
  • Schwapper : weapons that resemble a bucket . With them you "slosh" a gush of ink in one direction.
  • Splatling : Weapons with high firepower that need to be charged similar to concentrators.

There are many variations of these weapons, and there are also some special weapons, which can usually be assigned to one of the standard types, but can vary considerably.

The secondary weapon is also a weapon that is always available to the player, but uses more ink. Most of these weapons are different types of bombs that have different benefits. Sticky bombs can stick to walls, Insta bombs explode immediately on impact, detector bombs track the enemy and explode when touched and Sepitox bombs paralyze the enemy for a short time. However, there are also other types of secondary weapons, such as the detector that marks enemy positions, the sprinkler that keeps coloring its surroundings for a long time, the ink wall , which for a short time represents an impenetrable barrier for the enemy or jump buoys with which you can can perform a super jump to the jump buoys set up.

The special weapon must be recharged by coloring and is usually stronger than the primary and secondary weapon. Examples of special weapons are the Tintferno , which can be colored by operating the touch screen a relatively large, circular area on the card, the ink titanium , which transforms a in a strong, large and invulnerable squid, can which slide through opposing ink Heulboje , a broad beam that immediately kills opponents in its sphere of influence, the bullet shield that makes you invulnerable, the Tintzooka , with which very powerful ink projectiles can be fired, or the "hail of bombs", which gives you the option of using the bombs of the secondary weapon without consuming ink throw permanently. These special weapons can only be used for a short time after activation.

dress

In addition to weapons, clothing can also be customized. There are three shops available, each specializing in one type of clothing, so there is one shop for shoes, shirts and headgear. This clothing not only gives the character a certain look, but also activates special abilities, whereby each item of clothing can have a maximum of four of them. One of these four skills is the main skill, which is firmly assigned to each item of clothing and has a stronger effect than the secondary skills, which are generated randomly. Depending on the brand (there are 15 different brands in the game + the Amiibo brand) of clothing, certain secondary skills are more likely and others less likely. With these skills, for example, the throwing distance of the bombs, the speed of the player, attack and defense can be increased or the consumption of ink can be reduced. There are a total of 24 different skills, 10 of which are only available as main skills.

In addition to buying clothes in shops, from level 4 there is also the option of ordering clothes from the character Siggi that other players who can be found in Inkopolis are wearing. These clothes can then be picked up from him the next day. From level 20 there is also the limited possibility of randomly changing all secondary skills in a piece of clothing. If an item of clothing has fewer than the three maximum possible secondary abilities, it is possible to add an additional secondary ability.

The game also includes the clothes of Ika Musume, the protagonist of the manga Shinryaku! Ika Musume as part of a collaboration between Nintendo and the manga artist.

Amiibo support

Together with the game, three amiibo characters have appeared, the Inkling boy, the Inkling girl and an octopus, who unlock different things in the game. Other amiibo are not compatible. The amiibo each unlock special tasks in which some missions from the campaign have to be played with a different weapon. With the Inkling girl, the weapon is a blob concentrator , with which you have to charge the individual shots and thus have a lower firing frequency, but a higher firing power and range. The missions with the Inkling-boys with a dollop Roller executed plotting with one color per roll, rather than use up them; However, it is also possible to shoot at a short distance. With the squid, however, there are different missions with special conditions such as B. Time Limits. With the ink titanium , a large squid, which is invulnerable and can easily swim through enemy ink and defeat opponents with one hit, there is also the permanent possibility of using a special weapon. By completing the missions it is possible to get exclusive clothes and weapons. The weapons are only replicas of the weapons that the player uses in the single player mode or in the amiibo missions (blob, concentrator and scooter). On July 8, 2016, five more Amiibo were released, including redesigns of Inkling girls, Inkling boys and squid in new colors, as well as aioli and lime, each of which unlocks a new song.
