A paint roller (even paint roller or paint roller ) consists of a bow-shaped bent metal rod with a handle and a roller for applying paint .

With paint rollers, it is preferred to work on large areas, as they ensure that the paint is applied evenly. On the other hand, brushes or paint pads are used on window frames or edges where clean closures are required . The Canadian Norman Breakey invented the paint roller in 1940.

Design

Paint rollers are made in different roller lengths. Usually, however, lengths between 11 cm and 27 cm are used.

Most of the handles are designed so that they can be easily attached to a length-adjustable telescopic rod.

Electric paint rollers are also available for faster work. With the help of a pump (battery or cable operated), the paint is sucked directly from the paint bucket into the roller. The electric paint roller is mainly used for thin, water-thinnable emulsion paints and latex paints . A very big problem with these versions is the color change and the heavy weight of the roller (due to the color in or on the roller). In addition, most systems are neither reliable nor splash-proof.

With conventional paint rollers, replaceable rollers are attached to the bracket, which are provided with paint by dipping them into paint buckets. These are easier to clean than rollers with internal supply.

Paint roller trimmings are available in countless variations. Depending on the area of application, different fabrics or skins, which also differ in the pile height, are used.

Types of fabric

Various materials with corresponding properties are used as the cover of the paint roller, which is to absorb the wall paint and transfer it to the wall:

  • Lambskins should be selected natural skins of the highest quality. For the painter, they still represent the top trimmings in terms of absorbency, color retention, stamina of the wool fibers and hiding power. There is no lint formation and the fabric has little splash. With proper cleaning and care, the lambskin is very durable. For best results, sheepskin rollers should be soaked in water before use and then rolled on a dry, clean surface until dry. In this way, loose wool fibers that are prone to be removed. After use, they should be carefully washed out with lukewarm water, dried and stored hanging. A special paint roller cleaner makes the tedious hand washing easier.
  • Artificial fur made from a heavy polyester quality with high absorbency is sold under the trade name Vestan . Paint rollers with this trim are mainly used for simple coatings and as disposable rollers.
  • Velor is suitable for all viscous paint materials such as oil paints or varnishes . The height of the pile is mostly lower than that of lambskin and varies between 4 mm and 25 mm.
  • Foam covers are mainly used for painting work, as their fine pores ensure a very smooth coating.
  • Structure and pattern rollers are mostly made of rubber or PVC to enable the application of patterns.
