Shinryaku! Ika Musume ( Japanese 侵略! イ カ 娘 , Eng . "Invasion! Squid Girl "), with the tagline The invader comes from the bottom of the sea! (Eng. "The intruder comes from the bottom of the sea") is a comedic manga series by the Japanese artist Masahiro Anbe , which was published from 2007 to 2016. The story is about the 'squid girl' Ika Musume who, according to her own knowledge, was born to conquer the human world.

In 2010, the manga was adapted by Studio Diomedéa (formerly Studio Barcelona ) and directed by Tsutomu Mizushima as an anime television series that follows the plot of the manga. A second season called Shinryaku !? Ika Musume followed in autumn 2011.

The story begins immediately with the appearance of Ika Musume ( イ カ 娘 ) near the beach bar Umi no Ie Lemon ( 海 の 家 れ も ん ). In a monologue, she explains her goal of subjugating mankind in revenge for the pollution of the world's oceans. As a first step, she puts herself in submission to the operators of the bar run by the Aizawa sisters. But it quickly turns out that Ika has absolutely no idea of ​​the human world. Since Ika Musume only looks like a 13-14 year old and Eiko Aizawa ( 相 沢 栄 子 , Aizawa Eiko ) treats her accordingly, she shows her skills for the first time by destroying a wall of the shop with her tentacles, which are also her hair. As a result, Eiko hires her to work through the repairs as an employee, whereby her tentacle hair turns out to be a great help. When she wants to get serious about the conquest, she first captures Eiko and then her little brother Takeru Aizawa ( 相 沢 た け る , Aizawa Takeru ). Chizuru Aizawa ( 相 沢 千 鶴 , Aizawa Chizuru ) but - who looks friendly but closed on the outside, but hides a dark side behind this facade - manages effortlessly to bring Ika under control. Out of fear and to make amends, she works from now on in the bar. In doing so, Ika's peculiarities are repeatedly exploited to do business; for example, their ink is used in food preparation.

Ika soon develops a casual friendship with Takeru. Likewise, the lifeguard Gorō Arashiyama ( 嵐山 悟 郎 , Arashiyama Gorō ), who is secretly in love with Chizuru, joins them . Ika is extremely popular with Eiko's neighbor and friend Sanae Nagatsuki ( 長 月 早苗 , Nagatsuki Sanae ), who is head over heels in love with her and forges plans for an intimate relationship with Ika. This kind of affection is too much even for Ika, which is why she prefers to hide from her. On the contrary, the surfer Nagisa Saitō ( 斉 藤 渚 , Saitō Nagisa ) really sees Ika as a threat and is correspondingly frightened - much to the delight of Ika, as she sees in her for the first time a person who shows her the appropriate awe. Another curiosity is the American Cindy Campbell ( シ ン デ ィ ー ・ キ ャ ン ベ ル , Shindī Kyamberu ), who, together with her slightly crazy, three-person research team, considers Harris, Clark and Martin Ika to be an alien and would prefer to be abducted to a research laboratory.

Ika finally finds a real friend in the middle school student Kiyomi Sakura ( 紗 倉 清 美 , Sakura Kiyomi ), whom she meets with a naively failed bell stroke and the subsequent attempt to talk her way out of it. Another important main character is Ayumi Tokita ( 常 田 鮎 美 , Tokita Ayumi ), the daughter of the owner of a rival beach house. Since Ayumi is a very pretty girl, she would be able to attract the guests herself; however, she is shy of people and quite quiet, which means that she therefore hides behind the mostly disturbing Kigurumi replicas of Ika Musume, which her father builds and uses to boost his business.

The manga series Shinryaku! Ika Musume is written and drawn by Masahiro Anbe . The first chapter was published in issue 35/2007 of the Shūkan Shōnen Champion magazine from July 26, 2007 and then further weekly up to issue 13/2016 from February 25, 2016. The magazine itself is published by Akita Shoten . Summarized as a tankōbon , 21 of the 22 bound editions have been published so far (as of February 2016).

Anime

Shinryaku! Ika Musume

The manga was adapted by Diomedéa , directed by Tsutomu Mizushima, as a twelve-part anime television series that first aired on TV Tokyo from October 5 to December 21, 2010 . The broadcast took place after midnight and thus on the previous television day. The episodes consist of three chapters each whose titles all end in "nai ka?" (“ イ カ? ).

An English subtitled version called Squid Girl was first streamed worldwide on Crunchyroll from October 9th to December 25th, 2010 .

The series has been released on DVD and Blu-ray Disc in Japan since December 24, 2010 , with the sixth and final disc being released on May 27, 2011. There are two episodes of the series on each of the six media, while the fifth and sixth medium also contain side stories with Mini-Ika Musume as an extra.

The editions on Blu-ray Disc were among the best-selling in Japan when they were released: the first two sold 6000 times each according to the Oricon charts in the first week and were thus able to position themselves in 4th and 5th place respectively. The third reached the top position with 9,000 copies in the first week, the fourth Blu-ray Disc rose to number 4, the fifth again to number 1 and the sixth and last to number 10.

In North America, the series was released by Media Blasters on two DVDs on September 27 and December 6, 2011 with an additional English dubbing. A Blu-ray followed on April 10, 2012.

Shinryaku !? Ika Musume

In issue 13/2011 of February 24, 2011 of the magazine Shūkan Shōnen Champion a second season of the series was announced. Diomedea will also produce this season, with season one director Tsutomu Mizushima acting as overall direction and Yasutaka Yamamoto directing.

It was broadcast shortly after midnight on TV Tokyo from September 27th to December 27th, 2011. On October 14th TV Aichi followed, one day later AT-X nationwide and from October 16th TV Osaka. Crunchyroll streamed the episodes with English subtitles about an hour after they first aired in Japan on TV Tokyo. The three chapters per episode of this season always end on “nai ka !?” ( な イ カ!? ).

The six DVD / Blu-Rays in the series were released in Japan from December 21, 2011 to May 16, 2012.

Shinryaku !! Ika Musume

The limited version of the manga volume 12 from August 8, 2012 came with an OVA called Shinryaku !! Ika Musume ( 侵略 !! イ カ 娘 ). Volume 14 from June 7, 2013 contained a second episode and a third is planned for Volume 17 from September 9, 2014.

The opening credits of the first season had the title Shinryaku no Susume ☆ ( 侵略 ノ ス ス メ ☆ ), which was interpreted by “ULTRA-PRISM with Ika Musume (Kanemoto Hisako)”. The title appeared on the single of the same name published by Lantis , each in a regular and a limited version, on December 15, 2010 and reached number 31 in the weekly Oricon charts, where it remained for 12 weeks.

The credits of the first season used a short version of the interpreted by Kanae Itō title Metamerism ( メ タ メ リ ズ ム , Metamerizumu ). The title was released on November 26, 2010 by Mellow Head as a single and reached number 52 (6 weeks) on the charts.

In addition, the character-song maxi-single Kore ga Umi e no Ai janaIka! ( こ れ が 海 へ の 愛 じ ゃ な イ カ! ) Attributed to "Ika Musume (Kanemoto Hisako)", which reached number 32 (5 weeks), the soundtrack Ikamusume OST on December 22nd and the radio play TV Anime " Shinryaku! Ika Musume “Drama CD janaIka? ( ＴＶ ア ニ メ 『侵略！ イ カ 娘』 ド ラ マ ＣＤ じ ゃ な イ カ？ ).

For the second season in the opening credits Powered High sung by Sphere and uncredited Kimi o Shirukoto ( 君を知ること sung) used by 'Ika Musume (Kanemoto Hisako) ".

In the OVA, Let's Shinryaku Time ( Let's ☆ 侵略 タ イ ム , ~ Taimu ) by ULTRA-PRISM was used as the opening credits and Puzzle ( パ ズ ル , Pazuru ) by Kanae Itō.

The BluRays for the first season always started in the top 10 of the general BluRay charts in their respective release week.

Ika Musume has the peculiarity of her sentences either as negative questions using “nai ka?” ( 〜 な イ カ？ , na-i-ka? ) Or statements with the copula de geso ( 〜 で ゲ ソ , derived from de gesu from the historical Edo Dialect ), whereby the sounds ika and geso are homophonic with "octopus" and "octopus tentacle" respectively. This idiosyncratic expression popularized by the anime found such widespread use that ika? ( 〜 イ カ？ ) and geso ( 〜 ゲ ソ ) won bronze at the "Grand Prix of Network Fashion Words 2010" ( ネ ッ ト 流行語 大 賞 , Net Ryūkōgo Taishō ). The prize is also supported by the Sankei Shimbun , which annually awards the "Grand Prize for New Words and Fashions " ( 新 語 ・ 流行語 大 賞 , Shingo Ryūkōgo Taishō ), the Japanese equivalent of the German word of the year .

The racing team LMP Motorsports used a Ferrari F430 named Pacific NAC Ikamusume Ferrari (PACIFIC NAC イ カ 娘 フ ェ ラ ー リ ) with an Ika Musume motif in the 2011 Super GT season in the GT300 class . In addition, the hospitality time in the paddock was set up like the beach bar of the series. This goes back to the fact that the director of the series Tsutomu Mizushima is also the racing director of the team.

A super deformed version of Ika Musume, known as Mini Ika Musume, is particularly popular with fans and appeared for the first time in the 5th episode of the first season, in the section Kawanai ka? ( 飼 わ な イ カ? ) Appeared. Due to its popularity, two five-minute extra short stories were also produced with this character (as of February 2012).

Shinryaku! In May 2015 Ika Musume started a collaboration with Nintendo's game Splatoon, whose protagonists can switch between human and squid form. This consists in the fact that Ika Musume has been available as clothing in the game since August 2015 and was also adopted in the US and European versions of the game.
