Splatoon 2 ( Japanese original title: ス プ ラ ト ゥ ー ン 2) is a third-person shooter from Nintendo that was released for the Nintendo Switch and is the successor to Splatoon . The special thing about Splatoon is that you shoot ink instead of classic bullets and you can transform yourself into an octopus, which allows you to swim in your own ink.

Gameplay

Game modes

All known game modes from Splatoon have been retained, the new modes are League Fight , Clam Chaos and Salmon Run .

Standard fight

Two teams, each consisting of four Inklinge / Oktolinge, play against each other. The point is to use your own weapons to color as much area as possible with your own ink. How this is achieved is a strategy. If you are eliminated, you will reappear in the game after a few seconds. The team that has colored the largest area after three minutes wins.

Rank battle

The battle for rank is about ascending in a system of ranks, with a victory the rank increases and a defeat the rank decreases again. The ranks range from C- (the lowest rank) to X (the highest rank, before an update up to S +). For each rank match sub-mode, the player has a single rank. Only one sub-mode of the ranked match can be played, which is changed every two hours. There are always 4 against 4 Inklings / Octolings.

  • The tower command mode is about taking the so-called tower. If you occupy the tower, it moves towards the enemy base. For every meter covered from the last distance record you get one point. There are also several checkpoints where the tower stops for a few seconds. If you reach the opposing base, you win immediately. However, if you have not captured the enemy base after the time has elapsed, the meters you have covered with the tower count. The game may be extended if the losing team owns the tower by the end of the 5 minutes.
  • In Operation Goldfish mode, the goal is to capture the goldfish. This is surrounded by a barrier. If a player picks him up, he receives the goldfish cannon. His previous weapon will be replaced by the goldfish cannon. The goldfish cannon has a lower rate of fire, but it does more damage. You have to move the goldfish cannon towards the enemy base, similar to the tower command. There is one point for every meter covered from the last distance record. If the player is eliminated with the goldfish cannon, it is dropped and can be picked up again. In addition, the goldfish cannon must not be carried for too long, as it explodes after a certain time and thus eliminates the carrier and nearby players. The winner is the team that promotes the goldfish cannon to the target on the opposing side or has the greatest distance record after the 5 minutes have elapsed. There will be an extension of the time if the losing team has the goldfish cannon when the time runs out.
  • In domination mode , the goal is to control a specific area. If you control the area, you get one point per second if you control more areas than the opponent. Areas can be taken over by coloring them with the weapons. If a team reaches 100 points, it wins immediately. Otherwise, after 5 minutes (and possible extra time), the team that has more points will be declared the winner. If necessary, there is an extension if the losing team is in control shortly before the end.
  • In mussel chaos mode, mussels are randomly distributed in the arena. Each team has a basket in which the mussels must be transported. The point is to have filled the opponent's basket with more mussels after the time has run out. If you eliminate an opponent, he drops his shells. At the beginning the baskets have a barrier that can only be broken by a power clam. A power clam is obtained by collecting ten clams. After the barrier has been breached, all of the mussels can be thrown in. A normal shell gives 3 points, a power shell 20 points. After a certain period of time, the barrier is restored and the associated team receives a power shell. The winner is the team that has collected 100 points first or has more points after 5 minutes. If necessary, there is an extension if the losing team has a power shell or the barrier of the winning team has been opened.

League fight

In terms of modes, this works in the same way as the rank fight, only you can play with your friends in this. You can enter the league battle after reaching rank B- in at least one rank battle mode. In a league match you can play the ranked battle modes with friends as a duo or group of four against other groups. Even in league battles, only one mode can be played at a time. The mode changes here after 2 hours. In ranked battles and league battles, however, a different mode is always playable. The group can set a point record until the mode is changed. Depending on the number of points achieved, you will receive a medal at the end of the 2 hours.

Private fight

In the Private Combat mode you create a room in which you can play with friends without scoring. The rules, the arena and the mode (both turf battle and rank battle modes) can be chosen by yourself. Voice chat is possible within this group using the Nintendo Switch Online app .

Salmon Run

In Salmon Run at Bär GmbH you have to fight so-called salmonids and boss salmonids with other players in order to collect fish eggs and gold fish eggs. You have to survive within three waves and collect the gold fish eggs. There is a certain number of gold fish eggs that must be met per wave. At the beginning of the game, each player receives a given weapon and also has a special weapon that he can use up to two times per game. At the end of each game, points are awarded for performance. For a corresponding number of points, you get rewards, including exclusive clothing.

Splatfest

A Splatfest is an event that is held once a month for one to two days on the weekend. A week earlier, Perla and Marina announce the two Splatfest themes that players can join in on. Only standard combat can be played during Splatfest; other modes - except for Salmon Run and Private Fight - are blocked. The players fight for their chosen team in standard fights.

After the Splatfest is over, the winner will be determined based on the popularity of the topic and the number of wins. All participants receive a reward at the end.

Competitive scene

Splatoon 2 also offers a competitive scene. It consists of many teams that compete against each other in so-called scrims games or tournaments and fight their way to the top. The highlights are the annual LAN tournaments and championships organized by Nintendo.

The current World Champion of 2018 and 2019 is the Japanese team GG BOYZ.

weapons

Splatoon's weapon categories have been retained and expanded. To equip a weapon, you have to choose a weapon package that consists of a main weapon, a secondary weapon and a special weapon. Examples of weapons are target concentrators, which represent a classic sniper, sloshers, a bucket filled with ink that is poured on the enemy, blob rollers, pluviators and normal firearms. These are similar to the well-known devices for painting walls from the real world. Secondary weapons are usually various grenades, such as sticky bombs that stick to walls and ceilings, Sepitox bombs that slow down enemies or detector bombs that automatically track enemies. However, there are many more. An example of a special weapon is the ink shock, which, when triggered, spreads ink all over its surroundings and kills players. Every weapon needs ink, which is charged when you swim on the ground colored by your own ink. This does not apply to special weapons, which do not consume any ink, but which have to be charged by coloring a certain area depending on the weapon.

Amiibo support

Splatoon 2 supports Splatoon amiibo. Each Amiibo unlocks a complete outfit consisting of three pieces of clothing. Each Amiibo expands the mini-game Squid Beatz 2 with a further piece of music or further options.

action

The plot of Splatoon 2 takes place two years after that of the first game and takes place in the fictional city Inkopolis, which is inhabited by the squid-like, humanoid Inklings and other sea creatures. After Limone won the last Splatfest of the first game, the Sea Sirens, Aioli and Limone, drifted apart. The duo of Splatoon 2 is TentaCool, which consists of the Inkling Perla and the Oktoling Marina.

Single player campaign

The single player campaign takes place in the Okto Canyon, which can be reached from Inkopolis Square. After the events of the Squid Sisters Stories, both Aioli from the Sea Sirens and again from the giant electric waves disappeared. Limone asks the player, whom she calls Agent No. 4, to look for them in the Octo Canyon. This is made up of several worlds and levels. The point is to free an electric wave at the end of each level. If you have collected all the Elektrowelse from one world, you can use the Elektrowelse to overcome a hurdle that prevents you from accessing the next world. In the individual levels you can also find some bonus content, such as scrolls, which unlock some bonuses. In addition, at the end of each world you have to eliminate a boss opponent, a very strong Octarian.

It turns out that the giant Elektrowels and Aioli were kidnapped by DJ Oktario. He had previously fled his prison and hypnotized Aioli with glasses. Together with Limone, Agent No. 4 defeats both the hypnotized Aioli and DJ Oktario and saves the giant electro-wels. DJ Oktario is captured again and the Sea Sirens get together again and release another song. In addition, if the player has played all levels with a weapon, the respective weapon can be bought in the Inkopolis shop.

Octo expansion

The DLC Octo Expansion is set in a subway station deep below Inkopolis, which can be reached via a staircase next to Inkopolis Square. During the action of the single player campaign, Captain Kuttelfisch and Agent No. 3 embarked on a journey that ended up taking them into the deep-sea railway. But the two lost sight of each other. Captain tripe then finds the player, an octoling, in the deep sea, whom he calls agent no. At the subway station, the two meet a phone. This explains that Agent 8 has to find four fucks in order to get to the Promised Land. To get to the stations where the bangs are located, Agent # 8 must complete multiple challenges, of which there are 80 total. These are located at stations on various underground lines. The challenges range from levels to mini-games and smaller tasks. During and between the challenges, Captain Kuttelfisch as well as Perla and Marina, who communicate with the others via a walkie-talkie, help Agent No. 8.

After agent no. 8 has collected all four bangs, the phone builds a mixer out of them, which it uses to mix Captain tripe fish and agent no. 8 into slime. Agent No. 3 rescues them and Agent No. 8 leaves the subway through a hole in the ceiling of the subway station. After a series of additional challenges, Agent No. 8 fights against and defeats a Slime Infested Agent No. 3. Once at the surface, Perla and Marina appear in a helicopter to rescue everyone. Shortly afterwards, the telephone called Tartar reappears together with a huge human statue to destroy Inkopolis. Agent # 8 Tartar stops with Perla and Marina. All fly to Inkopolis in a helicopter.

After you have played through the plot of the Octo Expansion , in addition to the Inkling, the Octoling can also be played in multiplayer mode. In addition, you receive exclusive clothing for completed subway lines and an additional boss fight after completing all challenges.
