Nintendo Switch Online is a paid online service from Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch that provides various functions for the console .

history

On September 19, 2018, Nintendo's first paid online service called "Nintendo Switch Online" was officially launched. It is the successor to the free Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection . The start of the service was planned for the end of 2017, but was later postponed to 2018. In Nintendo Direct on May 15, 2019, Nintendo presented a new exclusive offer for members of the Nintendo Switch online service: Two AAAs can now be obtained with so-called game coupons, which can be downloaded for 99 euros from the Nintendo eShop -Download games. As of May 2019, 25 titles are taking part in this campaign.

User numbers

In an annual report, Nintendo announced that as of February 2019 there are over 8 million subscribers to the Nintendo Switch online service. This does not include users of the free 7-day trial version. As of April 2019, around 9.8 million Nintendo Switch users had a subscription to the service. The service reached 10 million users in July 2019 and over 15 million in January 2020.

Functions

Features for members of the online service are:

  • Unlock online multiplayer modes in games that support them
  • Voice chat via the Nintendo Switch Online app for Android and iOS
  • two applications that can be downloaded free of charge from Nintendo eShop , each with a library of classic NES and SNES games that is expanded every month (see list of Nintendo Switch online games )
  • a cloud storage option to save your game data (some games are not supported)
  • exclusive offers, for example the NES controllers available separately exclusively for members

Functions such as the Nintendo eShop, software updates, the share function, the friends list, viewing high scores on online rankings, certain game modes in games and some free-to-play games can also be used without a Nintendo Switch Online membership .

criticism

The Voice App, which is part of the Nintendo Switch online service, has been criticized by the press because it is only compatible with a few games. In addition, it is unnecessarily complicated that players are forced to keep their smartphones close by and switched on while playing.

It has been criticized that, unlike the paid online services from PlayStation and Xbox, PlayStation Plus and Xbox Live , subscribers to Nintendo Switch Online do not have access to games of the current generation of consoles, but only to NES and SNES games.

The NES controllers are too expensive for what they offer.
