history

First PlayStation logo, which was developed with the eponymous first game console, the PlayStation, released in 1994 and reused in 2018 with the PlayStation Classic

In the mid-1990s, Sony was supposed to develop a CD drive in the form of an add-on for Nintendo's current game console, the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), whose code name was " Nintendo PlayStation ". In return, Sony would be allowed to develop its own console with a CD-ROM drive that could use the valuable SNES technology at the time. When Nintendo announced that it would sign a contract for the "SNES-CD" project with the Dutch company Philips (which was canceled a little later), Sony decided to use the experience gained from the joint project to create a completely independent game console, whose internal project title "PlayStation Experimental" is said to have been to develop. Other sources, however, say that the X stands for “Extreme”, while others refer to “Expansion”, as Nintendo also used this abbreviation for its SNES satellite add-on SatellaView-X (BSX). That is why it wore the unofficial abbreviation "PSX" until the PSone and PlayStation 2 were released. With the appearance of the successor "PlayStation 2" in 2000, the device was renamed PSone , which also brought a visual makeover to the device, but the abbreviation PSX continues to last beyond the life of the console. Under the official name " PSX ", Sony released a multimedia hybrid of PS2 and hard disk recorder in Japan.

The PlayStation was the first game console ever to sell over 100 million times.

With around 157.68 million units sold, the PlayStation 2 is the best-selling game console of all time to date (as of May 2019) .

The PlayStation 3 sold around 87.4 million times, despite relatively weak sales start until 31 March 2017 and occupied by the Wii from Nintendo in second place of the best selling game consoles of this generation.

The PlayStation 4 was able to sell around 100 million times by July 30, 2019, making it the game console with the most units sold in the current generation of consoles.

target group

In commercials for PlayStation products, adolescents or young adults between the ages of 15 and 30 are usually shown playing games together on a PlayStation game console. Sony thus stands out from the rather child-like and familiar image of its competitor Nintendo, which mostly shows children with their families in their commercials , who primarily play casual games. Sony is thus pursuing a similar marketing concept to Microsoft with its video game brand Xbox.
