The PlayStation 5 (official abbreviation: PS5 ) is a stationary game console belonging to the PlayStation brand from the Japanese Sony group , which, according to the manufacturer, will be launched on the market for the 2020 Christmas season. It is the successor to the PlayStation 4 , with which there should be backward compatibility , and is expected to compete with Microsoft's Xbox Series X console .

Technical specifications

hardware

According to the company, the PlayStation 5 will support hardware-accelerated ray tracing and use a solid-state drive (SSD) for data storage . Similar to the planned Microsoft than competing console Xbox Series X, and Sony uses in developing its new console at the main processor to AMD's Ryzen product line with the Zen-2 micro-architecture and the GPU on AMD's new rDNA-2 architecture. The optical disk for games are 100 GB touch and a drive can be played at the same time as 4K -enabled Blu-ray - player serves. Games can also be installed by downloading them from the Internet . The built-in SSD in combination with the software should significantly reduce loading times. According to Sony , the PlayStation 5 should also consume less power than its predecessor and be quieter. Furthermore, the console wants to be able to better reproduce surround sound in the games with a 3D sound system .

software

The graphical user interface of the PlayStation 5 has been redesigned. Players should be able to install and delete their games in sections. For example, only the single or multiplayer mode can be installed, which should reduce loading times and reduce the required storage space to the functions that are required by the player.

Controller

For the revised PlayStation 5 gamepad , the manufacturer announced adaptive shoulder buttons and improved vibration motors that are more sensitive than previous rumble motors. With variable resistances when operating the shoulder buttons, the new controller called DualSense should provide more sensitive haptic feedback , which should, for example, clarify the tensioning of a bowstring or differences between different firearms in the game. The motors in the body can be controlled separately and simulate the movement of the tires on different surfaces in racing games, for example . Due to the larger battery and the new haptic motors, the weight of the controller increases compared to the DualShock 4 . The controller can be used wirelessly via Bluetooth and USB-C is used as the charging port . The share button of the predecessor has been replaced by a create button. The controller has a microphone and built-in speakers as well as a jack connection for external headsets. In contrast to its predecessors, the controller will no longer be called DualShock , but DualSense. The controller's design was first revealed to the public on April 7th, 2020 on the PlayStation blog.

PlayStation VR

According to Sony, no new PlayStation VR glasses will appear for the release. The old PlayStation VR glasses are still supported. According to developers, it is possible that a successor to the VR glasses may appear after publication.

equipment

The first accessory was shown live on June 11, 2020 as part of the PlayStation 5 reveal. The products “DualSense Charging Station”, “HD Camera”, “Pulse 3D Wireless Headset” and the “Media Remote” were shown one after the other.

DualSense Charging Station

The charging station shown offers space for two DualSense controllers, which enables both controllers to be charged at the same time.

HD camera

The HD Camera is the successor to the PlayStation Camera , which was released for the PlayStation 4. Similar to the PlayStation Camera, the HD Camera offers a dual camera system, which enables a depth perception of the environment.

Pulse 3D

As the successor to the Gold Wireless Headset of the PlayStation 4, the Pulse 3D offers the possibility to be connected wirelessly to the PlayStation 5. The headset is charged via a USB-C connection on the right auricle, which also has a 3.5 mm jack connection so that the headset can be used on other devices via a cable.

Media Remote

Unlike the licensed remote controls from pdp for the PlayStation 4, the Media Remote is an official product of Sony Interactive Entertainment LLC. The remote control is similar to the usual television remote controls and has the familiar buttons fast forward, rewind, pause, rewind, mute, volume up and down, and a directional pad. In contrast to the remote controls of the PlayStation 4, this remote control has a button for a voice assistant.

Games

Backward compatibility with PlayStation 4

Games for the PlayStation 4 should also be able to be played on the PlayStation 5. ( Downward compatibility ) However, so far there has only been a guarantee that the 100 most played games on the PlayStation 4 will work on the PlayStation 5. To avoid misunderstandings, Sony announced three days later that almost all of the 4,000 or so games would also work smoothly on the PlayStation 5. Due to the performance of the console, the games should run at higher or more stable frame rates and a higher resolution. Since the newer hardware can lead to errors in a few games, Sony looks for the problems in the game software and then contacts the developers for adjustments.

The following games will be released at launch of the console:

development

After the PlayStation 4 received a hardware upgrade from the PlayStation 4 Pro in June 2016, Sony Interactive Entertainment boss Shawn Layden announced a year later that there would be a stand-alone successor console. As early as 2015, Sony was increasingly looking for programmers for the new console. The first devkits were distributed to developers in 2018. PlayStation system architect Mark Cerny announced the first information about the console in the US technology magazine Wired in April 2019.

On October 8, 2019, the PlayStation 5 was officially announced in an article on the US PlayStation blog for the end of 2020.

The unit or production cost of a PlayStation 5 is around 450 US dollars , according to Bloomberg . The official website of the Playstation 5 was launched by Sony on February 5th.

On March 18, 2020 , information about the installed hardware was revealed in a press conference by Sony, which was broadcast live to the public.

On April 7, 2020, Sony posted detailed controller design insights on the PlayStation Blog.

On June 11, 2020, Sony showed the design of the console, as well as trailers of games to be released for the console, for the first time in a live stream.

The start of sales should begin for the Christmas business in 2020.
