PlayStation Camera (first generation)

The PlayStation Camera is an accessory for the PlayStation 4 game console and is a further development of the PlayStation Eye for the PlayStation 3. It was developed by Sony Interactive Entertainment and published at the same time as the PlayStation 4.

overview

A dual camera system, similar to Microsoft's Kinect, allows depth perception of the surroundings. Alternatively, the two cameras can be used for different tasks. For example, a sensor can be used for motion detection and the second camera can simultaneously record a video recording. The two cameras each support HD resolutions and a maximum frame rate of 240 frames per second. In addition, four microphones (microphone with four channels) are installed. This structure allows individual noises or voices to be spatially assigned and also serves to suppress noise. Additional voice control would therefore be conceivable for games. According to Sony, the camera will be equipped with additional software features after the PlayStation 4 has been launched. So far, gesture control, voice control and face recognition have been announced. The camera is essential for the operation of PlayStation VR. In addition, with the PlayStation Camera it is possible to log in with your face when the lighting conditions are sufficient.

Sales figures

In March 2014, Sony announced that a total of over 900,000 units of the PlayStation Camera had been sold worldwide. In 2016 it was estimated that 15 percent of all PlayStation 4 users also owned a PlayStation camera.

Revision

With the official launch of the PlayStation 4 Slim and PlayStation 4 Pro on September 7, 2016, a revision of the PlayStation Camera with a release date of September 15, 2016 was also presented. The new design has a cylindrical shape instead of the rectangular shape of the first generation of the PlayStation Camera and now has a stand with which the camera angle can be adjusted itself.
