LittleBigPlanet 3 is a platform game and was of Sumo Digital for the PlayStation 3 and the PlayStation 4 developed. It was released worldwide between November and December 2014 and is the third game in the LittleBigPlanet main series. The game was first announced at Sony's E3 conference on June 9, 2014. It was mainly developed by Sumo Digital with the help of XDev , with Media Molecule as a support.

LittleBigPlanet 3 received consistently good reviews for the release. Critics praised the optics, the "creation mode" and the new game elements, such as the new characters. A big point of criticism, however, were the technical errors.

On February 7, 2017, LittleBigPlanet 3 was available for the PlayStation 4 as part of the PlayStation Plus subscription for free until the end of February 2017. It is also the first PS4 game that allowed previous patches to be reinstalled.

Gameplay

LittleBigPlanet 3 plays similarly to its predecessors: LittleBigPlanet and LittleBigPlanet 2 . So it's a platform game with sandbox elements. Like the other LittleBigPlanet games, LittleBigPlanet 3's main focus is on creating. The players can create:

  1. Level
  2. Characters
  3. Objects
  1. Power ups
  2. Tools
  3. Decorations
  4. Sticker
  5. vehicles

and much more.

Players also have the option to share their creations. The main gameplay consists of traveling through colorful and dynamic levels and this, with the help of various characters, using power-ups, jumping, swinging, interacting with switches and NPCs and grabbing and moving objects. You can also defeat enemies, complete various side quests in addition to the main quest and find collectibles such as prize bubbles, materials, objects and gadgets.

Characters and skills

LittleBigPlanet 3 includes, besides Sackboy, three new characters, each of which has its own skills. OddSock is a four-legged dog-like character, who is faster than Sackboy and can jump walls. Swoop is a bird-like character who can fly freely through the levels and lift light objects. In addition to objects, he can also lift other characters, with the exception of the large toggle, into the air. Toggle is the last character who can transform into a large, heavy version, as well as a small, light version of himself. The large version, also known as the large toggle, is much heavier than Sackboy and can stomp down platforms and pressure plates. Its smaller version is called the small toggle and has the ability to run quickly on the surface of the water and go through small holes. Level creators have the option to allow players to use multiple characters during the game. Sackboy has the special ability to climb ropes.

LittleBigPlanet 3 also includes a small amount of power-ups that give you small effects when equipped, a total of 5 are available for Sackboy to find.

In addition to the ready-made power-ups, level creators also have the option of creating their own power-ups. There are 70 tools in addition to the tools from the games LittleBigPlanet , LittleBigPlanet 2 and LittleBigPlanet PS Vita .

Backward Compatibility

All previously downloaded content packs from LittleBigPlanet and LittleBigPlanet 2 can be transferred to the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 versions of LittleBigPlanet 3. However, it is not possible for LittleBigPlanet 3 to transfer the story progress from the PlayStation 3 version to the PlayStation 4 version.

User created levels

In LittleBigPlanet 3 , players can play any of the community-created levels from Parts 1 and 2. The PlayStation 4 version has improved graphics and offers a resolution of 1080p , while the PlayStation 3 version supports a resolution of 720p .

While level creators had three layers available for creating levels in the previous games, level creators in LittleBigPlanet 3 have a total of 16 layers available on which objects can be placed.

As always, the creators are bound to a thermometer, but there is now also a so-called "dynamic thermometer", with which you can place more objects in a level. There is also now the possibility of "sewing together" levels and thus converting several smaller levels into one large level. Thus, a level can be infinitely large, the only limitation is the storage space on the PlayStation.

history

LittleBigPlanet 3 starts in a white void, in which the narrator ( Gordon Piedesack ) teaches the player the controls. In the middle of it all, Newton ( Hennes Bender ) interrupts him by creating a dimension hole with one of his machines, which Sackboy sent into a new world called “Bunkum”, where he meets Newton. Newton tells a story in which Nana Pud will free three titans long ago sealed by heroes. The duo flies with Newton's airship to the home of Nana Pud, the “Sticksie-Villa” and Newton asks Sackboy to infiltrate the mansion because he still “has to cook eggs”. When Sackboy reaches the roof and defeats Nana Pud and Wächter, Newton shows up and tells his real intentions to open the box with the titans to make Bunkum more creative, and it becomes clear that Nana Pud is his mother. Newton opens the box and the titans take possession of Newton.

Nana Pud and Sackboy team up when it becomes clear that Sackboy has also been tricked by Newton and they decide that they have to awaken the three heroes, starting in the Mangle Forest, where the first hero is located. Elder Marlon Surf helps Sackboy to find the three marbles hidden in the mangle forest, which are needed to awaken OddSock. When the hero was awakened, the two set out to find the next hero, Toggle, in the ziggurat. On the way there, they are stopped by Newton, who tries to defeat Sackboy and Oddsock with the help of a titan. When the boss is defeated, he is locked in the can again.

When they arrive at the ziggurat, they meet Papal Maché, who helps with the marbles again. Now with the changing size toggle at the side and the new target in the Bunkum Lagoon, the three are stopped again by Newton, who has tried again with a titan who is again imprisoned.

Once in the lagoon, the three of them are met by Pinky, who helps the heroes with the last marbles to free Swoop. With all four heroes in their luggage, the five Newton “visit” his quarters, which is standing in the corner and begging for mercy to catch sackboy. So the four heroes had to save Sackboy.

The heroes manage to stop Newton and free Sackboy. Furious, he unleashed the last titan. By which he regained control over himself and his mean behavior disappeared. The six manage to banish the last titans again and also blow up Newton's quarters, whereby they fall into their near death and were saved at the last second by Captain Pud, Newton's father. They fly back to the Sticksie mansion, where Newton is building a new portal so that the five can travel to the homeworld of Sackboy.

development

LittleBigPlanet 3 development began in 2011, shortly after LittleBigPlanet 2 was released . Studio Sumo Digital took over the main development, but they were supported by Media Molecule at the start of the project. Media Molecule decided not to develop LittleBigPlanet 3 because they were busy with other projects like Tearaway and Dreams . Media Molecule also wanted to "step back" a bit from the LittleBigPlanet series, but also said they want to stay involved in the series at all times. Additional developers were XDev Europe , Tarsier Studios , Supermassive Games , The Station and Testology .

Damian Hosen, the game's design director, said of his work with Media Molecule : "That was very valuable to us. [...] It was very cool to see what they thought, how the game was made, what their visions were and what limitations they have set for themselves. " Media Molecule stressed Sumo Digital about the need for the story to be a perfect example of what the players can create themselves. Hosen said that the concept helped: "everything made sense [...] the parts placed themselves as if by themselves. [...] These personal insights were invaluable for development."

During development, 20 members of the LittleBigPlanet community were allowed to work alongside Sony XDev and give feedback and improvements to the game mechanics. In addition, the opening sequence, which is a mixture of live action recordings and visual effects, was produced by UK Studio Carbon Digital. During the production of the video, you "worked" with Sumo Digital .

At the beginning of development, the playable characters were simple silhouettes and the developers created a lot of "placeholders", from which the best were selected and designed, which then became the familiar characters: Oddsock, Toggle and Swoop. (Before that, Sackboy was the only playable character, even if he looked a little different.) Oddsocks and Swoops design were determined early on and only got slight changes during development. Anyway, Toggle was just the "big" character and couldn't transform into a smaller version. It was then revised in such a way that the well-known "toggle idea" came about; without this there would be "not enough variety" in the game mechanics for the players. Pete Smith of SCE Worldwide Studios said, "The characters have to change the game, be completely customizable, fit the world and have their own personality. I think these three, perfectly balanced, a depraved character, were the" bagworm "It didn't make it long before it ended up in the trash."

LittleBigPlanet 3 was announced at E3 2014 during Sony Computer Entertainment's press conference .

LittleBigPlanet 3 received positive reviews from the reviewer. The game received a rating of 80.78% on GameRankings based on 50 reviews and 79/100 on Metacritic based on 78 reviews.

Justin Clark of Joystiq gave the game a 4.5 out of 5 and praised the level design, the change of the pace, the improvement of the adventure mode, the new characters and items, as well as the hook helmet, a new power-up in LittleBigPlanet 3. He also praises the user-friendliness and relaxing creative mode and the tutorial. He said, "LittleBigPlanet 3 is the foundation from which eager minds can begin building inspirational content".

GamesRadar's Louise Blain gave the game an 8/10, extolling the inclusion of a tutorial, expansive characters, and the innovative menu. However, she criticized the Adventure Mode for being too short and having frustrating checkpoints and slightly disappointing pre-built content. In summary, she summarized the review as follows: "Wonderful, creative and full of knitted joy, LittleBigPlanet 3 disappoints, however, with the poor content of the adventure mode. Still, it includes an impressive range of design tools for level creators."

Kevin Dunsmore from Hardcore Gamer gave the game a 3.5 / 5 and said: "LittleBigPlanet 3 is an endearing and charming game that works its way into the hearts of gamers thanks to its presentation and new characters. The" end-game "content is endless, thanks to the Koops , the level creator and millions of community creations, as well as imports from level of the previous games, but was Sumo Digital will not be able to realize all the ideas. "

GameSpot's Alexa Ray Corriea gave the game a 7/10. She praised the soundtrack, the new character introductions, the drastic gameplay change when another character is controlled, the freedom in controls, the challenging but rewarding levels, and the Popit Puzzle, which is an introduction to the creative mode. However, she criticizes the low use of the other characters in adventure and co-op mode and the game-destroying bugs. She says: "The drive for creativity is limited by the campaign, but the overwhelming presence of the creative mode offers limitless possibilities to shape the LittleBigPlanet."

Philip Kollar of Polygons rated the game a 7/10, writing: "Despite moving to a new developer studio, it has big ideas and the wide-eyed demeanor showed the game at its best. However, it doesn't commit itself in any particular way and doesn't go completely into the new path or characters. Fans of LittleBigPlanet 3 certainly create excellent levels, but most likely it feels like a concept for a better LittleBigPlanet 4. "

Chris Carter, writer for Destructoid , gave the game a 7.5 out of 10. Says, "With all of the innovation Little Big Planet 3 brings with Toggle, Oddsock, and Swoop, it's a shame they can't really show you what it is as this is the best the show has produced in the last few years. It would be nice to see you in a possible sequel, but hardcore LBP fans now have enough creative options for the next few years. "

Eurogamer's Chris Schilling gave the game a 7/10. He praised the new content and improvements, as well as the creative mode tutorial, but strongly criticized the presence of technical difficulties. Schilling summarized his review as follows: "Held together by tape instead of superglue, there is a possibility that everything could collapse."

IGN's Lucy O'Brien gave a mixed review. They gave the game a 6.8 / 10, extolling the design and visuals but criticizing the "game-damaging" technical issues. O'Brien says: "LittleBigPlanet 3 is a gigantic - and sometimes unruly - game. [His] adventure mode is nicely designed and the new power-ups and character abilities stand out from the standard platforming principle, but it also disappoints the limited co-op mode and, above all, the numerous game-destroying bugs [...] Newbies may be discouraged by this, but will be surprised with the creation toolkit with which you can create enormous and deep levels, this justifies the existence of Little Big Planet 3 complete.
