Dreams is a sandbox game developed by the British developer Media Molecule exclusively for the PlayStation 4 . The project was first presented at the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2015 in Los Angeles and was released worldwide on February 14, 2020. The publisher is Sony Interactive Entertainment .
It is a video game that focuses entirely on user-generated content . The environments and challenges are created by the players themselves and created levels can be shared with other members of the online community . Dreams was awarded the “Best of Gamescom Award 2019” as the best game at the Gamescom trade fair in August 2019 .
Gameplay
The player controls a character called "imp" using the DualShock 4 controller or the move controller . This functioned as a cursor with which objects in the game can be grabbed, dragged, arranged and otherwise manipulated. The appearance of the imp can be individually adapted and via an input using the touchpad it is possible to assign an emotion to the character, which affects the further course of the game. The individual levels of the game are divided into segments, the dreams . With the imp, characters can be taken over and controlled within these sections. Challenges in the form of puzzles and environmental puzzles are then mastered with the help of the skills of the imp and the characters additionally acquired. Items collected in the sections are used for further processing and influencing the game environment. The developers place great value on the use of creativity and thus the possibility of creating levels yourself and making them available to other game owners online. In addition to the single player mode, Dreams also has a cooperative multiplayer mode in which two players work together to create and master sections of the game. In addition to the free development when creating new segments, there is also a story mode in which the player is presented with ready-made levels and can thus learn how to use them.
Game mode
Four different game modes are available to the player in Dreams :
- Dream Surfing ( Dream Surfing )
The main mode of Dreams can be tried in the created games of the developer and the community.
- Community Jam
In this area, players can find projects on a specific topic that change every week and can also add their own creations. The best projects are evaluated by the community and receive awards.
- Dream shaping ( Dream Shaping )
Here, the user's own games, music videos or other projects can create and provide the community publicly available. Entry into the creative processes is supported by numerous tutorials and tools.
- Home area ( Homespace Editor )
This is an interactive lobby, the personal area of the players. This can be adapted to individual preferences and is, so to speak, a player's calling card.
development
The software studio Media Molecule names the cornerstones of the development of Dreams with the motto “play, create, share”, which means “play, create, share”. A principle that has already been used in other projects of the studio, such as LittleBigPlanet or Tearaway . In an interview, the technical director David Smith explains that the focus is on promoting creativity and that the player should be given every opportunity to freely create an individual game world and share it with the community. Particular emphasis was placed on ease of use, which, according to Smith, should be as intuitive as making sketches.
IMPY Awards
During the Early Access period on the PlayStation 4 from April 16 to December 9, 2019, players could already download a non-final version of Dreams and create their own projects. During this time, numerous creations were created that show how powerful the tools are that the creative construction kit makes available to players. On January 26th, 2020, the best works created so far were recognized by the developers and the community as part of the IMPY Awards. The award ceremony was broadcast live on the Twitch streaming portal and is to take place every year.
