GameTrailers ( GT ) was a website that specializes in computer game related content. It offered free access to reviews , previews , game trailers and recorded gameplay videos . Many of the video clips were available in high definition ( resolution : 960 × 540), as well as standard definition (resolution: 640 × 360).

Users could upload videos , blog, and participate in forums. In addition, users could create groups for video games and other interests, with groups having access to private forums. GameTrailers first had a currency called GameTrailers Dollars (GTD), which could only be earned by interacting with the website and was used to purchase digital items and real merchandise products. However, that currency has been replaced by a new currency called GameTrailers Points (GTP).

history

GameTrailers was founded in 2003 by Geoff Grotz and Brandon Jones. Jon Slusser and his company Hornet Animation invested in the startup and Jon became chief executive officer . The company was acquired by MTV ( Viacom ) in November 2005 for an undisclosed sum .

Between 2005 and 2008, the American television station Spike ran the computer game magazine Game Head, produced by GameTrailers . In 2008 the show was renamed GameTrailers TV with Geoff Keighley and ran on Spike until it was discontinued in November 2013.

In 2007, MTV Networks restructured its entertainment division, with iFilm.com and SpikeTV.com being merged into Spike.com and bundled together with GameTrailers and Xfire into Spike Digital Entertainment. Jon Slusser became Senior Vice President, Geoff Grotz Vice President Product Development and Brad Winters the new GM (General Manager) of GameTrailers .

In June 2014, GameTrailers was sold to Defy Media and two-thirds of the employees were laid off.

On February 9, 2016, GameTrailers announced its immediate closure by Defy Media. Brandon Jones and parts of the dismissed editorial team then founded the Easy Allies website , which covers topics similar to GameTrailers , but only uses self-produced content and no longer uploads any trailers. The GameTrailers YouTube channel was taken over by IGN in May , which continues to upload trailers there.
