Lycium vimineum is a plant species from the genus of the buckthorn ( Lycium ) inthe nightshade family (Solanaceae).

description

Lycium vimineum is an upright shrub that reaches heights of 1 to 4 m. The leaves are hairless or hairy only very finely downy. They become 3 to 50 mm long and 1 to 7 mm wide.

The flowers are hermaphroditic and usually four-fold, rarely five-fold. The calyx is cup-shaped and hairless. The calyx tube is 1.8 to 2.5 mm long and covered with 0.4 to 1.5 mm long calyx lobes. The crown is colored white and funnel-shaped. The corolla tube becomes 5 to 7 mm long, the corolla lobes 2 to 3 mm. The stamens are hairy tomentose at the base.

The fruit is a red, spherical berry that is 4 to 5 mm long and wide. Seven to twelve seeds are formed per carpel .

Occurrence

The species is widespread in South America and occurs there in Argentina and Uruguay .

Systematics

Molecular biological studies place the species together with Lycium californicum and Lycium nodosum in a clearly supported clade , Lycium californicum forms a sister clade to the other two species.
