description
Lycium californicum is a 0.1 to 2 m high, confused, branched, prostrate or creeping shrub . Its leaves are succulent , 2 to 25 mm long and 1 to 3 mm wide.
The flowers appear in two forms and are fourfold. The calyx is bell-shaped and hairy downy. The length of the calyx tube is 2 to 2.5 mm, the calyx lobes are about 1/3 as long as the calyx tube. The crown is white to pale purple in color. The corolla tube is 2 to 4.5 mm long, the corolla lobes are about the same length or only slightly shorter.
The fruit is an egg-shaped, orange-red or red berry . Each carpel forms only a single seed .
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 24, 36 or 48.
Occurrence
The species is common in North America and occurs there in the Mexican states of Baja California , Baja California Sur , Coahuila , Sinaloa , Zacatecas , Sonora and San Luis Potosí , as well as in the American states of Arizona and California .
Systematics
Internal system
Four varieties are distinguished within the species:
- Lycium californicum var. Californicum
- Lycium californicum var. Arizonicum A. Gray
- Lycium californicum var. Carinatum
- Lycium californicum var. Interior F.Chiang
External system
Molecular biological investigations place the species together with Lycium nodosum and Lycium vimineum in a clearly supported clade , Lycium californicum forms a sister clade to the other two species.
