Kinect
Kinect (derived from the English kinetic connect , German kinetic connection ) was hardware for controlling the video game consoles Xbox 360 and Xbox One , which was sold since the beginning of November 2010. Kinect was developed by Microsoft together with PrimeSense . ( Page no longer available , search in web archives ) Players can use it to operate the software simply by moving their bodies instead of using conventional gamepads . Kinect was first presented to the public at the E3 games fair on June 1, 2009, then still under the code name Project Natal .
This new type of control is made possible by a combination of PrimeSense depth sensor, 3D microphone , color camera and software . A game is controlled by movements and language.
On July 14, 2009, Bill Gates also announced that this technology would also be ported to Windows . It is primarily intended to facilitate menu selection within Windows Media Center . But the development team for the office application Microsoft Office is also in the process of developing new interfaces between humans and computers . Johnny Chung Lee was hired to develop this motion control and implement ideas. He studied human-computer interfaces at Carnegie Mellon University and became known for his unusual projects on Wiimote controllers for the Nintendo Wii game console .
At the start of sales in Germany on November 10, 2010, the price was 149 euros. On November 15, 2010, Microsoft announced that Kinect had already sold over 1 million times. Fifteen days later, Microsoft confirmed that a total of 2.5 million Kinects had been sold.
After 35 million units sold, Microsoft stopped production of the Kinect in 2017.
Project name
The Project Natal is after the origin Natal named the Brazilian developer Alex Kipman, who launched the project life.

Publication date
Kinect was released in North America on November 4, 2010. Since November 10, 2010 the product has also been available in Europe. In Australia, Kinect was released on November 18, 2010, and two days later in Japan on November 20. At launch, the Kinect sensor was available in a bundle with Kinect Adventures and in a bundle with the Xbox 360 S (4 or 250 GB).
Since September 2014, after the introduction of the interim Xbox One solo version - without the external Kinect unit - in June 2014, Kinect 2 was also available separately for the Xbox One.
Kinect for Windows
phase of development
On June 16, 2011, Microsoft announced the release of a beta version of the Kinect for Windows SDK from Microsoft Research for non-commercial applications, which would enable developers to develop initial solutions for Kinect on Windows 7 . ( Page no longer available , search in web archives )
features
In addition to the familiar features of Kinect, Kinect for Windows had the following characteristics:
- Support for up to four Kinect sensors per computer.
- Near mode for the hardware, which enables the depth camera to detect objects up to a minimum distance of 40 centimeters from the device.
- Significantly improved person recognition, including the ability for developers to define which person is detected by the sensor.
- Microsoft Speech components.
- Improved "Far-Talk" acoustic model for more accurate speech recognition.
- Distributable installer for the Kinect for Windows runtime environment for developers.
Availability
On January 9, 2012, Steve Ballmer announced February 1 as the commercial release date of Kinect for Windows in the United States at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. ( Page no longer available , search in web archives ) Along with the general availability of the hardware, the Kinect for Windows SDK and the runtime library in version 1.0 for Windows 7 appeared for developers.
Use with other systems
Just a few days after the commercial release of Kinect in the USA (November 4, 2010), device drivers were developed so that it can be used with Linux and the Microsoft Windows 7 operating system .
The open source project "openni.org" develops software that evaluates the data from the depth camera in real time. B. recognizes / isolates people in front of the camera. Furthermore, a human “standard skeleton” is projected into recognized / isolated people, and the joint positions of this skeleton are tracked as closely as possible to the isolated person. In addition, openni offers software wrappers in order to be able to address these functionalities with C # and Java .
On January 3, 2011, an official clone for the PC was presented, the Asus WAVI Xtion . The Wavi will be created in collaboration between Asus and PrimeSense (who were also responsible for the reference design of Kinect). Microsoft has now published its own Kinect SDK for Windows. It allows the SDK to be used for non-commercial purposes; a commercial version should be released at a later date.
With the Kinect adapter for Windows and the Kinect SDK , it can be used with Windows 8 and Windows 10 . Using the 3D scan application on Windows 10, it is also possible to perform a 3D scan with the Kinect One.
Use in surveillance systems
Kinect has been further developed for surveillance tasks. A variant that can differentiate between human and animal movements is used on the Korean demarcation line between North Korea and South Korea for border surveillance .
