Microsoft Research (MSR) is a division of Microsoft that was founded in 1991 to research computer science topics. Microsoft Research employs researchers including CAR Hoare , Butler Lampson , Charles P. Thacker , Leslie Lamport, and (until his disappearance at sea) Jim Gray and Michael Freedman .

The developments that have brought it to market readiness include the C # programming language and the PixelSense computer system , but also the ClearType and Sidebar functions used in Windows . Microsoft has its own research centers in the following areas:

  • Microsoft Research Redmond was founded in 1991 by Nathan Myhrvold on the Microsoft campus in Redmond . Buildings 112 and 113 are available there.
  • Microsoft Research Cambridge (England) was founded in 1997 by Roger Needham and now has over 100 employees. It has a close relationship with Cambridge University .
  • Microsoft Research Asia (MSRA) was founded in Beijing in November 1998 . The Advanced Technology Center was originally a division of the MSRA before becoming an independent research group from Microsoft.
  • Microsoft Research Silicon Valley was founded in August 2001 in Mountain View . In January 2006 it was merged with Microsoft's Bay Area Research Center (BARC) in San Francisco.
  • Microsoft Research India was founded in January 2005 in Bengaluru .
  • Microsoft Cairo Innovation Center was founded in 2006 in Cairo .
  • Microsoft Research New England is founded in 2008 in Cambridge, Massachusetts .

collaboration

There is close cooperation and joint funding with research centers at Brown University , Carnegie Mellon University , the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Trento . There are nine jointly operated research centers in China and Hong Kong.
