Roger Needham

Roger Michael Needham ( CBE FREng FRS ) (born February 9, 1935 - March 1, 2003 in Willingham , Cambridgeshire ) was a British computer scientist .

Among his theoretical contributions is the development of the Burrows-Abadi-Needham logic for authentication . Together with Michael D. Schroeder , he developed the Needham-Schroeder protocol , which is the basis for authentication and key exchange with Kerberos . He was also involved in the development of the Tiny Encryption Algorithm (TEA) and the extended TEA , both algorithms for block encryption .

In 1962 Needham began working for the Computer Laboratory , which was then called the Mathematical Laboratory. In 1980 he became head of the Laboratory, in 1981 he became a professor and stayed with the laboratory until his retirement in 1995. Needham founded Microsoft's UK research center in 1997 . He is also a founding member of Wolfson College , Cambridge.
