Carl Friedrich August Grosse

Carl Friedrich August Grosse (born June 5, 1768 in Magdeburg , † March 15, 1847 in Copenhagen ) was a German writer, translator and geologist .

Life

Born the son of a doctor, Carl Friedrich August Grosse first attended grammar school. In 1788 he began his medical studies in Göttingen and continued this in Halle .

As early as 1790 he returned to Göttingen “as a Stolberg court and forest councilor, as a Knight of Malta, Marquis von Grosse and Count von Vargas” . After serving in the military in Spain in 1791 , he served in Italy from 1792 to 1809 under the name "Count Vargas" . Much of his literary work was created during this time.

Under the name "Count von Vargas-Bedemar" he was in the service of the Danish government in Copenhagen , where he was entrusted with high offices and was friends with the king. In his capacity as a geologist, he was a member of several scientific societies.

Grosse himself said of his writing: “I confess that I only wrote for entertainment” , but was very much appreciated by romantic writers such as Ludwig Tieck , Wilhelm Heinrich Wackenroder and ETA Hoffmann .
