SingStar is a karaoke game from Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation 2 , PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 . With the help of the associated microphones , it is the task of the players to sing along well-known rock or pop songs in such a way that the pitch and length specified on the screen, represented on the screen by colored bars, are met. The way it works is based on pitch recognition using an FFT algorithm . Since a firmware update it is possible to operate the PS3 SingStar games with the help of voice control. SingStar supported, but does not necessarily require that EyeToy - USB camera for the PS2 and the Eye camera for PS3. Also since 2009 the PS2 games can be played on the PlayStation 3.

With SingStar German rock-pop for the first time a SingStar version that is only one language appeared. Since the version is completely in German, it was only available in stores in the German-speaking countries of Germany , Austria and Switzerland . The same applies to the DVD SingStar Die Toten Hosen , SingStar German Rock-Pop Vol. 2. , SingStar Après-Ski Party , SingStar Turkish Party , SingStar Schlager and SingStar Mallorca Party . SingStar The Dome appeared in Norway and Sweden under the name SingStar Norske Hits (Norway) and SingStar Svenska Hits (Sweden), respectively . These versions are similar to SingStar German Rock-Pop , but include Norwegian or Swedish artists who sing in English and Norwegian or Swedish, as well as songs by international singers such as Avril Lavigne or Robbie Williams .

The programmer Corvus5 developed a SingStar-like game for the PC as part of a fan project . It was first published in June 2005 under the title UltraStar . In contrast to SingStar, UltraStar can be expanded to include new songs.

On October 31, 2019, it was announced on the SingStar website that all SingStar and SingStore servers will be shut down from January 2020. All offline content is still available after the shutdown.

The SingStar microphones

The SingStar microphones are mono microphones that are connected to a supplied USB converter, which in turn is connected to the USB port on the Playstation. It is easily possible to use the microphones with a normal 3.5 mm jack connection. The USB converter is connected to a PC, recognized as a microphone under Windows XP and installed automatically, whereby the two jack connections work together as one stereo channel. With the two connected SingStar microphones, stereo recordings on the computer are possible. Since April 2009 the original SingStar wireless microphones, which have long been announced by Sony, are available, which are compatible with both the PlayStation 3 and the PlayStation 2. To use it, a USB converter supplied must be connected to the console and the microphones switched on at the push of a button. There is no longer any cable between the converter and the microphones, so it is possible to move around freely. The microphones have a range of approx. 10 meters.

Notes on the PS2 games:

  • 1 The Special UK Edition contains 14 tracks that are not featured on the German version. The menu navigation is in English.
  • 2 In Germany only the UK version of SingStar Anthems , SingStar 90s , and SingStar Rock Ballads has been released. The menu navigation is in English and the title list is also that of the English version. With SingStar R&B only the track list is the same, the menu navigation is German and therefore no UK version.
  • 3 The SingStar Turkish Party version includes menu navigation in Turkish.
  • 4 On SingStar Singalong With Disney are the same songs as on Singstar Best Of Disney , but in English.
  • 5 The "Multipack" contains Aprés-Ski Party , Pop Hits , Hottest Hits , Summer Party , German Rock-Pop Vol. 2 and the "Superpack" Queen , Turkish Party , ABBA , Pop Hits and Schlager .
