Chris Backes

Christoph Wilhelm "Chris" Backes (born October 22, 1959 in Kaldenkirchen ) is a German law scholar and professor at the University of Utrecht .

Live and act

Backes studied law , political science and Dutch at the Universities of Freiburg and Münster . He later obtained a Master of Laws in Dutch law for foreigners at the University of Nijmegen . In 1993 he was supported by the University of Utrecht with that of PJJ van Buuren and FCMA Michiels supervised environmental protection laws work "Legal bescherming van ecologisch waardevolle gebieden" Dr. iur. PhD. From 1995, Backes worked as a full professor for international and European environmental law at Tilburg University. In 1998 he moved back to the University of Utrecht, where he also held a full professorship for environmental law, but at the same time became director of the Center for Environmental Law and Politics (CELP / NILOS). He was also a consultant in committees of the Dutch Ministry of the Environment until 2007 . From 2007 to 2016 he was Professor of Constitutional and Administrative Law at Maastricht University . In 2016 he returned to Utrecht again and again became professor of environmental law. At the same time, Backes became a member of the Utrecht Center for Water, Oceans and Sustainability Law (UCWOSL).

Backes' research focuses primarily on environmental law and sustainability law in the Netherlands as well as, and above all, in comparison with the corresponding systems in other European countries.
