War Thunder is a free-to-play - computer game of the Russian game developer Gaijin Entertainment . The Massively Multiplayer Online Game (MMOG) is a flight , ship, helicopter and tank simulation , also with combined vehicle types (ships or tanks together with aircraft).

development

The development of War Thunder began under the title World of Planes as early as 2009. Gaijin Entertainment was already known for detailed flight simulations such as IL-2 Sturmovik: Birds of Prey and Wings of Prey . Due to the similarity in name to World of Warplanes , a similar game by a competitor, it was renamed. According to the developer, the game has already reached over three million players.

Gameplay

General

The game world is designed in 3D and the game principle is based on player versus player (PvP) battles. Scenarios from the Second World War through to the battlefields of the Cold War with models covering the period from 1930 to around 2005 serve as the background . There are also prototypes, tanks, airplanes and helicopters from the post-war period used, although a distinction has to be made here, since the game contains tanks from the late Cold War and even more modern helicopters, but the most modern airplanes from the late 1950s come from. (Examples are: Tanks: Maus , T-54 , Leopard 1 , Leopard 2 , Kanonenjagdpanzer , T-64 , Challenger 1 , M1 Abrams Aircraft: Mikojan-Gurewitsch MiG-17 , Hawker Hunter , North American F-86 , Grumman F -9 Cougar , Fiat G.91 helicopters: Mil Mi-24 , Mil Mi-4 , Mil Mi-35M , Bell AH-1Z Viper , Bell UH-1 , Bell AH-1 Cobra ). Since May 2014, battles on the ground can also be fought with the help of tanks. Helicopters have also been included in the game since September 2018, but initially only for the USA , the Soviet Union and Germany ; they were still in a beta phase; This means that before the player can play the helicopters, he must either buy a helicopter as premium content or work his or her way through a series of difficult tasks. As of 2019, every player who owns a level 5 aircraft or tank can buy the nation's first helicopter. The use of warships is currently being tested in the open beta. At the moment the USA , the Soviet Union, Germany and Great Britain have access to warships and thus access to the Open Beta. Properties such as aerodynamics , armor and armament can be modified in aircraft from version 1.33. Similar modifications are also possible with the tanks. With all vehicles, new vehicle types and improvements are unlocked via a point system via "research trees", whereby this research can be accelerated by purchasing the in-game currency Golden Eagles for real money. The aircraft and helicopter models are rich in detail, the flight behavior can be selected from three different modes between arcade- heavy and simulator-like, but only slightly resembles the real control of airplanes, while the flight behavior was implemented reasonably realistically. The models are assigned theoretical maximum values, so after complete research some types have significantly better performance than the real models. Without the modifications made by research, the vehicles and aircraft are dramatically worse and at a disadvantage in combat.

Several vehicles and planes can only be activated with the premium game currency. This is especially the case with rather rare vehicles, prototypes and conquered vehicles and aircraft.

Examples of such aircraft and vehicles are the T-35 , the SMK , the Sd.Kfz. 140/1 , the PzKpfw II Ausf. H , the T-34 E (with additional armor), the Curtiss-Wright XP-55 , Commonwealth Wirraway , Commonwealth Boomerang , Westland Wyvern S.4 , Pe-2-205 Peschka , Douglas BTD or the A6m5 Ko-Reisen .

In addition to the premium and freely researchable war material, there are also rare aircraft that can only be obtained for certain missions by chance or by solving difficult tasks. Examples are the Polikarpow Po-2 , Tupolew TB-3 or the Dewoitine D.520 .

Business model

The operator earns money by selling different currencies in the game. For the "Gaijin marketplace", through which players can also sell virtual items, a currency that is exchanged one-for-one for US dollars ("Gaijin Coins") is used. Other currencies such as the "Golden Eagles" are extremely unlikely to be playable. Gambling elements are built in - a daily “one-armed bandit” who generates random rewards even in rounds of the game. In addition, there are daily actions that can be used to achieve rewards by solving tasks. The "matchmaker", who puts together the player teams, is used for further customer loyalty. This should further increase the motivation to buy the currencies by putting the teams together in such a way that all players achieve balanced game results. The statistics can be viewed online, even without the game client, and, as expected, shows a win / loss ratio of around 50% for almost all players.

control

There are several types of controls available that players can use to control their aircraft based on their own experience and skills. The simplest form of control is the mouse target mode, in which the player is supported by a virtual "instructor" who stabilizes the aircraft and also controls elements such as B. the rolling , takes over. In this mode, the player only has access to the simplest elements of the aircraft (controls, shooting, panoramic view). The controls can be expanded in their complexity and the "trainer" can be switched off, so that the player can ultimately have complete control over all elements of the aircraft.

The aircraft can be played from the cockpit with a virtual head-up display (HUD) or in the third person; many bombers also have a bomb sight and a rear-facing camera that allows control of the gunner.

Game modes

A total of four game modes are available:

  • Arcade battles with randomly generated teams, which are put together regardless of historical alliances, and simplified flight behavior. The planes have more power and more armor than in the other game modes, abnormal flight conditions such as e.g. B. the spin can almost not be achieved. In addition, damage due to excessive aerodynamic loads, so z. B. by too high speed or too high load factors in curves, deactivated. There is also an unlimited supply of ammunition for the aircraft, which can also be replenished during the mission. In addition, is an individually adjustable lead point available, which is intended to facilitate the shooting. In addition, the player can spawn three times in tank and airplane matches and up to six times in ship matches (with 3 planes, using a point counter as in realistic battles). In tank matches, it is also possible to trigger an aircraft spawn by shooting down enemy players, in which you can intervene in the action with 1 kill as a fighter pilot, with 2 as a dive bomber and / or with 3 as a heavy or medium-weight bomber, something that enemy players can do with Anti-aircraft tanks, own fighters or even tank guns and machine guns the tanks can be countered.
  • Realistic battles in which the players usually compete historically correct and with realistic flight behavior. The aircraft can be damaged by aerodynamic loads, no longer fall back on the lead point and no longer have unlimited ammunition. Instead, this can only be reloaded on carrier ships or airfields. Likewise, you can no longer respawn easily in realistic battles . While War Thunder was eliminated entirely in earlier versions or in aircraft battles, the player can now invest vehicle points in tank battles after death in re-entrances based on the type and "animal level" of the respective vehicle or aircraft as well as the already made re-entries are taxed. Selected aircraft can be used in tank and ship matches, as long as enough points are available after a player's death.
  • Simulator battles in which War Thunder is more like a war flight simulator and in which the views are limited to the cockpit view and the mouse aim mode and the virtual "instructor" are not available. As in historical battles, ammunition is also limited. The flight behavior is very realistic in this mode, and simulator training is mandatory before participating for the first time.
  • "Storm" is a mode in which several players have to defend an airfield, which is attacked in waves by bombers and fighters controlled by an AI. The controls in this mode are the same as in the arcade mode. Upon successful completion, it contains a battle trophy, which gives the player a random bonus / booster.

There are also different types of missions: “Ground attack”, “Domination”, “Front line” and “Operations”, but not all of them are available in every mode. There are no operations in arcade mode, and there is no domination mode in historical mode.

Battlefields

The orthogonal battlefields are based on historical battles of the Second World War in terms of topology, vegetation, buildings and season, including:

communication

Text chat

The players can communicate via the internal chat . There are three modes of message visibility for chat: Team, Squadron, All

Voice chat

The players can communicate within the relay via microphone. An integrated extension from Vivox is used for this.

Squadron and combat groups

The formation of squadrons is possible in War Thunder . The advantage of a relay is that the members can communicate better with each other and thus play more effectively. There is also the option of forming squadrons with random players in a round. However, this can also be deactivated. The option serves to achieve graduated rewards without having to actively form a season with someone. Combat groups are reserved for premium players.
