Xbox Series X is a stationary game console developed by Microsoft and the successor to Xbox One . The system was presented at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) on June 9, 2019 and is expected to compete with Sony's PlayStation 5 console . The release is planned for November 2020. The technical details were published on March 16, 2020.

console

hardware

The hardware is based on an 8 cores / 16 thread CPU / GPU combination of the AMD Navi and Zen-2 architecture. The APU has a frequency of 3.66 GHz (8 cores / 16 threads) or 3.8 GHz (8 cores / no SMT). This enables the hardware support of ray tracing (RDNA 2 with DXR-Tier-1.1). The built-in RAM is of the GDDR6 type and 16 GB in size. 10 GB of the memory are connected with 560 GByte / s, 6 GB of the memory are connected with 336 GByte / s. The console also has an internally built-in NVMe SSD with a connection of 2.4 GByte / s which can also be used as virtual memory. The internal SSD is not exchangeable; the memory can optionally be expanded via a proprietary slot on the back with an external SSD, which was developed in cooperation with Seagate . Resolutions of up to 8K and a frame rate of up to 120 fps should be possible, with variable frequencies being explicitly supported for the first time in the console environment. According to the manufacturer it has four times the processing power of the Xbox One X .

The console has a 4K Ultra HD Bluray drive for playing Ultra HD Blu-rays , Blu-rays , DVDs and CDs . An external hard drive can be connected via USB 3.2.

The maximum power consumption of the console is 255 watts (12 V / 21.25 A).

Graphics processor

The chip size is 360.45 mm² which TSMC manufactures in a 7 nm enhanced process. The graphics unit consists of 56 compute units (CUs) with 3584 shader cores. 3328 usable shader cores (52 active CUs) come with a constant GPU clock of 1825 MHz and around 12,155 TeraFlops FP32 computing power.

The target performance of the Xbox Series X is rendering at a resolution of 4k at 60 frames per second. Microsoft said the console CPU will be four times as powerful as the Xbox One X, including support for real-time ray tracing, rendering up to 120 frames per second, and 8K resolution over the HDMI 2.1 standard. The console will also support new features of the HDMI 2.1 standard, including Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) and Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) that are currently being built into newer TVs. The console will have special audio hardware acceleration. A feature called "audio ray tracing" will use the graphic ray tracing processors to process spatial audio data in the same way to improve audio immersion for the player.

design

The design of the Xbox Series X has the shape of a cuboid with a slightly concave ventilation grille on the upper side. The dimensions are 151 mm × 151 mm × 301 mm (W × D × H) with a weight of 4.45 kg. The console can be placed horizontally or vertically.

Gamepad

The Xbox Series X gamepad has been slightly redesigned. It has a new directional pad , shoulder buttons with a grip surface and a share button.

Launch title

The following video games will be released with the release of the game console:

history

Even before E3 2019, there were increasing rumors that Microsoft would introduce the successor to the Xbox One. Microsoft fueled this speculation itself in part by publishing cryptic references via the short message service Twitter and an unspecified countdown.

The console was presented for the first time during Microsoft's press conference at E3 in 2019 (at that time still called Project Scarlet ).

On December 12, 2019, the design and the final name Xbox Series X was announced for the first time at the award show The Game Awards 2019 .

According to the current schedule, the console is scheduled to hit the market in November 2020.
