action

After the events of the previous game JD, Del and Mark along with Kait that the rank of sergeant added gets officially returned to the COG army. Reformed as the new Delta Force, at Damon Baird's request, they travel to the Ruins of Azura to launch a Hammer-of-Dawn satellite to restore the Hammer-of-Dawn network. They then return to the COG capital, New Ephyra, but Baird informs them that he still cannot find the other satellites. First Minister Jinn learns of the launch and orders them not to restore the network as this would be against the will of the late Anya Stroud, who decided to permanently decommission the Hammer of Dawn.

Jinn receives news that Settlement 2 is under attack by the swarm and sends JD's squad to assist with the evacuation. They are accompanied in the defense of the settlement by Augustus Cole, Clayton Carmine, his niece Lizzie and Fahz Chutani, JD, and Del's former teammate. During the battle, it was revealed that JD, Del, and Fahz had previously been deployed to Settlement 2 to quell a riot that resulted in the deaths of civilians and prompted JD and Del to leave AWOL. During a heated argument with Del, Fahz reveals that JD gave him orders to open fire on the civilian population, causing Del and Kait to lose confidence in JD. When the swarm attacks increase and threaten to destroy the evacuation convoy, JD orders Baird to fire the Hammer of Dawn prematurely. While the swarm forces are being destroyed, the Hammer of Dawn fails and begins to shoot wildly. JD rescues a group of civilians but is seriously injured after failing to save Lizzie from death by the hammer blows.

Four months later, Kait and Del reach an outsider village in the Skeleton of the Riftworm to convince them to join the COG. The village chief, Kait's uncle Oscar, refuses to join, but the village is suddenly attacked by the swarm. During the fight, Kait is captured by a snatcher and experiences vivid visions of the control of the swarm forces. She escapes the snatcher, but cannot prevent Oskar's death. COG reinforcements, led by JD (who is now a captain) and Fahz, then arrive to evacuate the village. Kait tells everyone about her visions, and Marcus recommends that she go to the secret laboratory in New Hope to find answers. Del decides to go with her over JD's objections. When they get to the lab, Marcus explains that chief scientist Niles Samson has been experimenting on children of people with emulsion poisoning. You will find clues that will lead you to Mount Kadar, a former Locust stronghold.

Kait and Del continue to Mount Kadar where they find another secret COG laboratory hidden under the ice. There they find Niles alive as an AI construct and uncover the frozen remains of COG staff and Locust. Niles explains to them that the Locust was the result of his secret genetic experiments by manipulating the DNA of Imulsion-infected children and hybridizing them with the indigenous creatures of the Hollow. He also reveals that Queen Myrrah was originally a human who possessed complete immunity to imulsion and could control the Locust because her genetics were used to create her. However, when their newborn daughter Reyna, Kait's dead mother, was released from the laboratory by her father, Myrrah led the Locust to rebel against the scientists and gain independence. Kait panics when she realizes she is the next queen and demands that she be separated from the crush. Niles places Kait in a special brain-scanning machine connected to a sleeping berserk named Matriarch, who successfully separates Kait from the Hivemind, but also revives Reyna in the process, as her consciousness is still in the Hivemind. Niles then flees, revealing that he purposely resuscitated Reyna so the crush can finish what the Locust started. Niles is soon destroyed by the resurrected Matriarch, Kait and Del kill it before fleeing the facility. Kait realizes that Reyna is now the new hive queen and affirms the need for the COG to reactivate the Hammer of Dawn.

Some time later, Baird brings the group to Vasgar, where the secret space program of the Union of Independent Republics was located. Baird meets again with his former teammate Garron Paduk, who is now the leader of a group of nomads who survive in the desert . Paduk reveals that the UIR had a rocket with Hammer of Dawn satellites ready for launch, a fact that both the COG and UIR kept a secret from the public. He also reveals that the swarm has recently become more organized and have developed new weapons and armor . When Kait, Del and Baird realize that the crush's increased intelligence is the result of Reyna's resurrection, they decide to reactivate the Hammer of Dawn as soon as possible. JD and Fahz also come to help Kait. JD apologizes to Del and Kait for his previous deception. The squad manages to assemble and launch the missile and acquire target beacons to control the Hammer of Dawn, though they soon face a massive swarm creature called Kraken. The group barely manages to escape when Paduk picks them up in a raven to fly them home.

Upon returning to New Ephyra, the group plans to start the Hammer of Dawn. Jinn tries to arrest Kait in order to forcibly bind her to the Hivemind in order to control the crush. Before she can do this, however, the swarm attacks New Ephyra. The Gears attempt to set up UIR target beacons to provide targeting data to the Hammer of Dawn, but the Kraken destroys them. Reyna, now transformed into the Queen of the Swarm, appears and attacks Kait, JD, and Del. Kait must either save JD or Del, and Reyna must kill the other. Kait and the survivor fight their way back to their friends, but are attacked by the octopus. The remaining soldiers fall back on the outer wall of New Ephyra to fend off the Kraken and are soon overwhelmed until the squad's robotic companion, Jack, kills the Kraken by sacrificing himself as a target signal for the Hammer of Dawn. As a result, Marcus warns Kait that Reyna will be returning, and Kait notices that they will find her first before throwing away her mother's Locust necklace.

development

Gears 5 was developed by The Coalition as a sequel to Gears of War 4 . In contrast to previous games in the Gears-of-War series, the game is simply called Gears 5 (without "of War" in the title). Xbox marketing director Aaron Greenberg said the new title was "cleaner" and a natural change as most people ignored "of war" for years. For Gears 5 , The Coalition decided to shift the focus of players from JD Fenix to Kait Diaz. According to studio manager Rod Fergusson, "It was a natural choice. When you play through Gears 4, think of it as Mad Max: Fury Road . It was really Furiosa's story, and Max was the side kick. This is how it felt in Gears 4 "The whole game is about saving Kait's mother and JD is really there to help her."

reception

According to the review aggregator Metacritic, Gears 5 has received “generally positive” ratings. Critics praised the gameplay, campaign, presentation, and amount of content, but criticized the story and lack of innovation. Many critics hailed the game as a successful return to form for the series.

IGN's Ryan McCaffrey gave the game a 9/10 in an enthusiastic review, stating, “It's not at all surprising that Guears 5 is an excellent third-person action game. This legendary series never really misfired from original developer Epic to The Coalition, even when it changed hands, and the hot phase remains unbroken. What was unexpected is how effectively the story doubles with a character-focused, consequential story that plays off and backs up one of the franchise's most underrated strengths with lots of fun and welcome additions to both the game formula and the flow of the game. And that's just the campaign: add a powerful multiplayer line-up of Versus, Versus Arcade, Horde and Escape and make Gears 5 one of the best, most versatile action game packs in the past store. "

Andrew Reiner of Game Infomer gave Gears 5 an 8.5 / 10 and concluded: “Gears 5 is exactly what it needs to be. That old war vet still has something to offer. Exploring the open world has problems, but that's not enough to take the wind out of The Coalition's sails, which it is cleverly using on the battlefield. The campaign is a fun ride that ends with a moment of shock and some hell of a build up for a sequel. I'm looking forward to this sequel. "

Wesley Yin-Poole, associate editor of Eurogamer , rated the game 4 out of 5 stars. He concluded, “The campaign is really great. Maybe even better than great the more I think about it. All the new things about it - the open world stuff, Jack's powers, the light RPG elements, the side quests - all of that stuff was made better by other games years ago. But those other games weren't Gears of War, which has really decent third-person shooting, really interesting things, and a story that doesn't try hard to win prizes. But while Versus, Horde, and even Escape are ultimately fine, they are let down by the party poopers' progression system. The hope is that The Coalition will tweak the way the Battle Pass works because it looks like Gears 5 is depressing. "

GameSpot's Phil Hornshaw rated it 7/10, praising the "open spaces " within the campaign and the "character moments " within it. However, he criticized that most of the campaigns felt "inconsequential" after the second act and that the campaign felt like a "replay of previous games". He concluded that "Gears 5 is a return to the best elements of Gears of War, but with the goal of making the game a little more adaptable to your particular play styles. Whether you have a campaign or a co-op, want a contest or quickplay, there is an option for you and many things to reward you for the time spent and skills acquired in Gears 5. Gears 5 could suffer the same storytelling missteps as its predecessors, and it dares to venture out maybe not far from the past, but the new ideas it brings to the series are all good reasons for fans to return. "

Slant Magazine's Justin Clark gave it a 4/5 rating, saying, "Escape is particularly notable for the amount of work that has gone into making Gears 5 otherwise accessible. The Gears of War franchise is one of its worst Habit Freed: Trying to prove yourself better, tougher, or more stoic than the rest so that the deeper implications of their lore could come to the fore. Although "of War" has been removed from the title, Gears 5 is the first that the series feels the brutality of its fights not only bloody and cathartic , but also on a human level engrossing and unsettlingly intimate. The core point of the Dudebro-Sagittarius has evolved over time, and the world is so much better for him. "

Sales

The game was played by 3 million people on the first weekend. It's Microsoft's most successful first-party launch since Halo 4 . In Great Britain , however, sales were lower than the predecessor, which sold significantly better at the start. The game became the biggest launch for Xbox Game Pass . In the launch week, more than 3 million players played the game.
