Gears of War 3

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gears of War 3 is a third-person shooter developed by Epic Games and published by Microsoft Game Studios . He is the direct successor to Gears of War 2 . The final part of the trilogy was officially announced on April 13, 2010 by Epics Design Director Cliff Bleszinski in an April 2011 TV interview. Gears of War 3 is the first installment in the series to be released in Germany.

Gameplay

In Gears of War 3 , there is for the first time a four-player co-op mode and three playable female characters: Samantha Byrne, Anya Stroud and Myrrah, the Locust Queen. Another new playable character is Jace Stratton, a battle-hardened soldier who appears in the comics and is mentioned in Gears of War 2 .

There are numerous new weapons, such as the Retro Lancer (with a normal bayonet), a double-barreled shotgun (also called Lupara), the incendiary grenade, the Digger Launcher or the One Shot, which can take out an opponent with just one shot. In addition, the Gorgon pistol is now fully automatic and bears the name Gorgon SMG.

action

Gears of War 3 begins two years after Jacinto was sunk. The surviving humans have either saved themselves on huge ships or in the ruins of the cities destroyed by the hammer blows to begin rebuilding. The Locust seem to have been eliminated for good, but the Lambent Locust are now attacking the last human bases. Marcus Fenix, Dominic Santiago, Anya Stroud, and Jace Stratton are on a battleship that sails through the waters of the Luminous and is immediately attacked by them. In this turmoil, Prescott, the chairman of the COR, whose disappearance led to the dissolution of the alliance, suddenly appears. This gives Marcus a message from his father Adam, believed dead, who is apparently still alive. When the Delta team is about to leave the ship, it is attacked by a gigantic glowing leviathan.

In parallel with these events, Augustus Cole, Damon Baird, Samantha "Sam" Byrne and Clayton Carmine, brother of Anthony and Ben Carmine from the previous parts, search for food and ammunition in Cole's hometown of Hanover. Thanks to Cole's reputation as an excellent trashball player for his home team, the stranded greet them warmly and provide them with supplies. Then the team receives an emergency call from the ship on which Marcus is with his troops. Cole and his team fight their way through the waves of the Glowing and Locust, who now live on the surface and are regrouping. When Cole's team reached the bridge under which the ship and the Leviathan are located, they fell a box full of "ticks", small Locusts equipped with bombs, onto the Leviathan, killing it, but both the ship and the also destroyed the bridge. Both teams barely survive this.

On the mainland, the Delta team fend off the attacking Locust and find the fatally wounded Prescott. With the last of his strength, he tells Marcus about his father's whereabouts, an island called Azura, and gives him a disc with its location. To decipher this disc, the team must go to the anvil gate, which lies behind the enemy lines of the Locust. Marcus, Dom, Baird and Cole hijack a Locust gas boat and pick up their old friend Dizzy Wallin on the way to the gate. When they arrive at the anvil gate, they must first defend it against the attacking Locust. After the attack has been repulsed, Azura can be located; however, the island is surrounded by a permanent hurricane, the maelstrom , which excludes both air and sea routes. Colonel Hoffman suggests a submarine; but they need fuel for that. Dom suggests Mercy, the hometown of his dead wife Maria, which is home to a large emulsion refinery.

Once there, the Delta team finds Mercy completely abandoned. Explosive devices were attached to the pipelines. The team follows the culprit to the city's catacombs, where they find him dead. Soon afterwards they meet the culprits: luminous people mutated by emulsion. The Delta team tries to fight its way out, but is surrounded by Locust, Luminous Locust, and people. Dom sacrifices himself by crashing into the petrol tanks in a truck, giving his team the chance to escape. The Delta team only has one option to get fuel for the submarine: The city of Char, devastated by the hammer blows.

In Char they meet the stranded and their boss Griffin, who is not at all good at the KOR. Griffin has lost a shipment of fuel in the Shining Area, the Delta team is supposed to retrieve it, in exchange Dizzy, who was kidnapped on arrival, is released. You manage to secure the cargo. On their way back to Griffin they see how his tower is attacked by the Locust Queen Myyrah and her troops. The Delta team manages to escape with Dizzy, finally finds a submarine in an old hangar and sets off for Azura.

On the island you will find a hotel-like complex that was taken over by the Locust. Adam Fenix can finally get in touch with the Delta team and tells the monstrous: Prescott knew about the Locust even before their first appearance and brought all the important scientists to this island before the day of their arrival. Fenix also tells them that he found a cure for the emulsion, but he needs the Delta team to use it. The team turns off the generator that is keeping the cyclone going, allowing the KOR troops to land. On the way to Adam, Marcus and his team fight their way through the Locust and barely escape another attack by Myyrah. The team finally meets Adam, who tells them that the cure will destroy not just the glowing ones, but all Locusts. At Myyrah's orders, Fenix was supposed to modify the remedy so that it spared the Locust, but he couldn't do it in time. On the tip of the island there is the final battle between the Delta team and Myyrah and her huge Tempest. After this has been defeated, Adam's machine sends waves of energy across the planet, destroying all cells infected with emulsion, killing all glowing and Locust. Adam pays a high price for this: in order to test his remedy, he infected himself and turns to dust in front of his son. Myyrah appears one last time and mocks Adam in front of Marcus, but he kills her with Dom's knife.

The KOR troops celebrate their victory; Marcus, however, mourns his father and Dom. Anya reminds him of his father's last words that they should now enjoy their lives to the full. Marcus only replies: "But what are we left with now?" Anya replies, “We have a morning. We finally have another tomorrow ”.

Development history

At the same time as the game was announced, a trailer called Ashes to Ashes (German: Ashes to Ashes) was released. The trailer announces some innovations, which were later also confirmed in interviews. Thus, the threat to people and Locust, already discussed in Part Two, is brought further into focus by the Luminous Locust.

In May 2010, Epic officially announced that Gears of War 3's multiplayer mode would support dedicated servers for the first time in series history. This is a reaction to the massive criticism of part 2, in which one player is the host and this player or his team can benefit from it. On October 1, 2010 it was announced that the release would be postponed to autumn 2011 for "business reasons".

The Epic version of the game Bulletstorm included access to the public multiplayer beta of Gears of War 3 . This enables players to participate from April 18, 2011, one week before the start of the regular test phase. The regular public beta runs from April 25, 2011 to May 15, 2011 inclusive. Pre-orderers of Gears Of War 3 received a code that enabled them to participate in the regular multiplayer beta test.

The games as part of the beta test were played on dedicated servers and gave the player the opportunity to unlock exclusive character and weapon designs for the retail version of the game.

On July 3, 2011, an unfinished version of the game appeared on various BitTorrent index pages. Obviously it is an early version, not yet intended for the end customer. Except for a few errors, the version is apparently complete. You have to modify your Xbox to be able to start the leak, which means that there is a risk of Microsoft being banned from the Xbox online offer.

Age rating

As the first part of the Gears-of-War series, the third part was released in Germany after the USK gave it an age rating of 18 and over. The USK had originally not refused a release, but doubted a non-indexing by the BPjM, which is why the game was passed on to them. These so-called cases of doubt can arise if youth impairment cannot be ruled out. However, the BPjM saw no basis for indexing . Therefore, the game received the 18 rating on the second attempt. Microsoft's company policy is to only publish games with USK approval in Germany.

reception

“All in all,“ Gears of War 3 ”is still one of the most brutal games ever and its quality lives up to its expectations. Cliff Bleszinski and his team at Epic Games send you through an adrenaline-charged shooter trip that will keep you entertained until the end. The staging is hard to beat when it comes to bombast! "

  • The magazine Gbase.ch gave Gears of War 3 a rating of 9.0 / 10 points and praised the intense atmosphere and the varied mission design.
  • The website metacritic.com calculated an average of 91 points based on 96 reviews.
