Villa Charcas is a village in the Chuquisaca department in the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

Villa Charcas is the central location of the newly created district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) Villa Charcas in the province of Nor Cinti and is located at an altitude of 2954  m in the immediate vicinity of the basin of Culpina, a drainless basin with the salt lake Salar de Culpina in the southwestern part. The Municipio Villa Charcas separated from the then Municipio Incahuasi in 2009 after internal disputes with Incahuasi . Villa Charcas is located at the confluence of the Río Villa Charcas and the Río Terrado to the Río Inca Huasi . South of Villa Charcas, the Río Inca Huasi flows after 39 kilometers into the Río Pilaya , a right tributary of the Río Pilcomayo .

Villa Charcas and Culpina are located in the mountainous region of the Cordillera de Tajsara o Tarachaca in the semi-arid transition area between the semi-humid mountain forests of the eastern mountain ranges of Bolivia and the arid Altiplano .

The annual rainfall varies between 350 and 550 mm and occurs mainly in the months from November to March; the winter months from May to August are largely free of precipitation (see Culpina climate diagram). The monthly average temperatures in the basin are between almost 20 ° C in December and 5 to 8 ° C in June / July.

Traffic situation

Villa Charcas is located at a distance of 439 kilometers by road south of Sucre , the capital of the department.

From Sucre, the paved road Ruta 5 leads in a south-westerly direction to Potosí , the capital of the department bordering to the west. From here the Ruta 1 leads south , which is still paved for the first 37 kilometers to Cuchu Ingenio . After another 146 kilometers, the Ruta 1 reaches the city of Camargo . Another 19 kilometers south of Camargo, a dirt road branches off in an easterly direction, crosses the Río Camblaya and overcomes a height difference of 600 meters over the next 47 kilometers to Culpina. To the east of Culpina, a road branches off to the northeast and after a further 21 kilometers past Incahuasi it reaches the community of Villa Charcas .
