Bulletstorm is a first-person shooter developed by People Can Fly and Epic Games in 2011. It was published by Electronic Arts for PlayStation 3 , Xbox 360 and Windows and was released in Germany on February 24, 2011. The controversial action game is characterized by exaggerated style and black humor , as the player scores points for killing in the craziest and most inhuman way possible. The German version has only been given an age rating in a very shortened form.
On April 7, 2017, a new edition was released under the title Full Clip Edition for Xbox One , PlayStation 4 and Microsoft Windows . Although the rights to the Bulletstorm brand remain with Electronic Arts, Gearbox Publishing took over the distribution . The Full Clip Edition has been technically revised and adapted to modern consoles. In addition, she offers the opportunity to play through the single player campaign in the role of Duke Nukem . After the international version of Bulletstorm was deleted from the list of media harmful to minors in February 2017 , the new edition was published uncut in Germany. On August 30, 2019, Bulletstorm with the subtitle Duke of Switch Edition was also released for the Nintendo Switch .

The game takes place in the 26th century. You slip into the role of the lawless Grayson Hunt, leader of the Dead Echo Squad, which was lied to by his employer General Sarrano.
Grayson and his Dead Echo Squad carry out murders on behalf of General Sarrano, who pretends to be mass murderers, slavers and other scum. Instead, the targets are reporters and other civilians holding evidence against Sarrano's corruption. When Gray finds out, he swears vengeance on Sarrano and withdraws from the Confederation.
Ten years later, they discover Sarrano's command ship "Ulysses" near the planet Stygia and decide to attack them. After Grayson's ship was almost completely destroyed, he flies one last kamikaze attack and rams the Ulysses. Grayson and his team, consisting of Ishi Sato, Rell and Doc Oliver, crash on Stygia. When Gray comes to, he finds Ishi Sato almost dead on the floor. To save Ishi, Doc Oliver needs an energy cell for bio-welding. Gray and Rell set off and find one of Serrano's men in a crashed escape capsule , who defends himself against several locals with a final echo whip and his peacemaker. After the latter has died and Gray has eliminated the last of the natives, Gray receives the Final Echo Whip and finds the required energy cell in the capsule. Shortly thereafter, however, Doc Oliver and Rell are killed, only Ishi survives, who is now half human, half robot. Ishi, who is very weakened by the accident and the bio-welding, has to get used to the fact that half of his body is now made up of mechanical spare parts. He needs a boost of energy to survive, so he and Gray set out to find it. Repeatedly involved in fights with locals, they reach a generator and Ishi is able to recharge.
When the Final Echo whip was found, they receive a radio signal from Trishka, the Final Echo Squad leader who reports to Sarrano personally. They immediately pursue Trishka in order to find Sarrano and flee from the planet Stygia, as Gray promised Ishi this in advance of the crash. When the two finally find Trishka, she flees from them, but after a brief chase in a labor camp, they band together. The three of them set off to find Sarrano. During a conversation, Trishka Gray reveals that her father Novak was killed by a bounty hunter, Gray noting that he was the said bounty hunter. When the three finally arrive at Sarrano, after a fight against a hecatonsaur, this Trishka suddenly knocks off a tall building. But because they need Sarrano to escape Stygia, Grayson cannot do anything about it. He, Ishi and Sarrano make their way to the crashed Ulysses to escape from the planet with a rescue ship. On the way there they are briefly separated from Sarrano, Ishi assures Gray of true allegiance and resolves that they will kill Sarrano after they have found the Ulysses.
Arriving on the Ulysses, Sarrano activates a DNA bomb that is supposed to destroy all life on the planet and imprisons Gray and Ishi. However, both are freed by Trishka, who surprisingly survived the fall. Together they catch up with the incoming rescue ship and fight the Heavy Echo Squad to get to Sarrano. In the confrontation with him, Trishka learns that Gray was the bounty hunter who killed her father. Sarrano uses the moment she is distracted to take control of Ishi. In the following fight, Ishi is eliminated and Sarrano is seriously injured, but Gray and Trishka are thrown from the rescue ship and land again on Stygia. The two immediately set off for Ulysses, only to be thrown into space in an escape capsule when the bomb exploded in Ulysses. They literally succeed in this at the last second.
After the end credits you can hear the voices of the surviving Sarrano and Ishi, who has now completely turned into a cyborg.
Gameplay
General
In Bulletstorm you get points for killing enemies in a variety of ways, which you can use to buy ammunition or weapon upgrades. With the Final Echo Whip you can pull opponents towards you and then kill them in any way you want. When an enemy is pulled towards you with the whip or kicked away, they are briefly in slow motion so that you have time to aim precisely.
In the course of the game you will always find blue glowing capsules that you can activate with your whip. These supply capsules are used to buy ammunition or weapon upgrades. Furthermore, all previously unlocked skills shots are listed there and you get an overview of your statistics.
Skillshot system
Skillshots are specific ways of killing your opponent to earn points. There are different numbers of points for performing different skill shots, the aim is to get as many points as possible.

In addition to these standard skill shots, there are also extra skills shots for each unlocked weapon.
Development history
The version for Germany has been reduced by many violent effects and depictions compared to the original version, and the USK has given it an age rating of 18 and over. The original version was indexed in June 2011 and removed from the list again in February 2017.
The Epic version of the game included access to the public multiplayer beta of Gears of War 3 . This version has also been indexed. The access enabled players to participate from April 18, 2011, one week before the start of the regular test phase. The regular public beta lasted from April 25, 2011 through May 15, 2011 inclusive.

Comment from Play3: “This rating hurts our hearts. Because "Bulletstorm" is a really first class shooter. The ideas are great. The scenario fresh. A significantly higher rating would have been possible without any problems. But the radical cuts cost the game valuable points. If these effects suddenly disappear in a game that is based on exaggerated and thus satirized depictions of violence, then too much atmosphere is simply lost. So also with "Bulletstorm"! What remains is a good shooter with a pretty bland aftertaste. We therefore recommend that adult players import the original English version. There you get the full boom of fun in the game - self-deprecating, fresh and unused. Here you can easily assign a rating from 8.0 to 8.5. "
Bulletstorm and Fox
The conservative American news broadcaster Fox News sparked a discussion about violence and sex in Bulletstorm . In an online article by the station, Bulletstorm was named a candidate for "the worst video game in the world" because of the striking violence and above all because of the sexual allusions in the titles of the skillshots. The author made a connection between games and sex crimes. Epic Games' President Mike Capps said:
“For an over the top game like Bulletstorm, they [Fox News] were more likely to drive sales than convince people to pick on us. Every journalist thought the Fox report was nonsense. But it was really bad for the entire industry. There are people who take Fox News' opinions very seriously and are now convinced that games are bad. "
