Yakuza: Like a Dragon ( Japanese 龍 が 如 く 7 光 と 闇 の 行 方 , Ryū ga Gotoku 7: Hikari to Yami no Yukue , literally like "Like a dragon 7: Remaining light and darkness") is a role-playing game that Developed and published by Sega . It is the eighth major version in the Yakuza series and was released for PlayStation 4 in Japan on January 16, 2020 . Worldwide release for PlayStation 4, Microsoft Windows , Xbox One and Xbox Series X is planned for November 2020. The latter has the game as its starting title. The PlayStation 5 version is expected to be released some time after the Xbox Series X was released.

Gameplay

Similar to previous games in the Yakuza series, side quests (called sub-stories in the game) can be picked up by the player for additional rewards, and players can also enjoy the various side activities on the map such as karaoke . A new side activity introduced in this game is Dragon Kart, which is similar in its gameplay to other kart racing games .

A major departure from previous yakuza games is the combat system. Instead of the real-time mechanics of previous games, Yakuza: Like a Dragon features turn-based RPG combat with a four-person combat team. Unlike typical turn-based RPGs, characters can use nearby items like bicycles to attack enemies (if the items are close to the enemies) or kick surrounding items to their destination if there is an interactive item in the area along the way for the enemy, an aspect that returns from the previous yakuza games. Players can also avail of various party aids to strengthen the party or defeat enemies, with further aids added as the story progresses or by completing sub-stories. Players can continue to explore the world after completing the game. A New Game Plus mode with additional levels of difficulty, which are exclusively available for this mode, is to be released as a paid DLC.

The new RPG combat system is complemented by Jobs, a form of character class that is similar to other RPGs. Players can change a group member's job to better suit the group's play style. There are currently two jobs that can only be obtained through paid downloadable content.

Summary

Setting and characters

For the first time in the Yakuza series, the focus is shifting away from Tokyo and the fictional replica of Kabukicho , called Kamurocho. Instead, most of the game takes place in Yokohama District Isezaki Ijincho, which is modeled after the real Isezakichō District of Yokohama. Kamurocho and the Osaka Sotenbori District (another area from previous yakuza games based on the real Dōtonbori District) will be featured in the game. Yakuza: Like a Dragon is also the first main game in which Kazuma Kiryu is not the main character and the new character Ichiban Kasuga is introduced instead. Sega has described Kasuga as much more open and emotional than Kiryu.

In addition to Kasuga, Yu Nanba, Koichi Adachi, Saeko Mukoda, Tianyou Zhao, Kim Yong-Soo and Eri Kamataki can be recruited for the player's group. Mukoda and Kamataki are the first female fighting figures in the Yakuza series that are directly controlled by the player. Once recruited, characters can be temporarily summoned to support the group during the fight, including former yakuza protagonists Kazuma Kiryu, Goro Majima and Taiga Saejima.

action

In 2001 Ichiban Kasuga, a junior member of the Arakawa family of the Tojo clan, was asked by the family's patriarch Masumi Arakawa to go to prison for a murder he did not commit in order to protect the real killer. A high-ranking officer whom Arakawa believes is indispensable. Ichiban agrees, hoping that it will make him a hero in the Tojo clan and seeking to honor an unspecified "debt" he owes his patriarch. Eighteen years later, Kasuga is released from prison only to find that no one remembers him and that no one in his family is even waiting to meet him when he gets out; he goes to confront Arakawa, who shoots him in the chest. A few days later, Kasuga woke up half-naked under a pile of garbage and finally learned that he was in Yokohama Isezaki Ijincho District. Realizing that his patriarch left him to die, he sets out to find the reasons and real reason for his sentence , a journey on which he meets with the help of the many allies he meets along the way , against yakuza , triads and Korean gangsters and criminals.

development

The game was originally announced on August 26, 2017 along with Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise and Yakuza Online . During development, the project was codenamed Shin Ryu ga Gotoku , literally "New like a dragon", "Like a new dragon" or "Shin-Yakuza" in German . Sega announced that the game's storyline would be completed in late May 2019. Yakuza series creator Toshihiro Nagoshi said the new style of the logo was made to reflect Ichiban Kasuga's different personality compared to Kazuma Kiryu. Sega has said that they wanted to try a different style of play, but that if it goes down badly, they'll revert to real-time combat for future games. The game is also the first major title from yakuza , which has received an English dub since the original yakuza in 2005 . The main music of the game, "Ichiban Ka", was composed by Shonan no Kaze, who previously composed the main music of Yakuza 0 .

The game was released for PlayStation 4 in Japan on January 16, 2020 . The Chinese and Korean versions were released on the same day. The global release for PlayStation 4, Microsoft Windows , Xbox One and Xbox Series X is planned for 2020 at different times. A PlayStation 5 version will be released at a later date.
