Hafiz Sherif Lëngu

Hafiz Sherif Lëngu (also Sherif Lengu , * 1877 in Debre , Vilayet Monastir , Ottoman Empire ; † March 9, 1956 in Tirana , People's Socialist Republic of Albania ) was one of the founding fathers of Albania and chairman of the nationwide Muslim community . He was a signatory to the Albanian Declaration of Independence and later a supporter of Albanian reunification .

Life

He received his first lessons in the madrasah of the city Debre-i Bala and then attended high school in Monastir . As early as 1894, the 17-year-old was in close contact with the patriot Said Najdeni . On February 27, 1899, Sherif took part in the Dibra Grand Assembly of Albanian Patriots .

He later continued his studies in Monastir and in 1904 went to Constantinople to study advanced theology . Here he met revivalists like Ibrahim Temo and Dervish Hima . In 1907 he moved to Debre and Monastir. Known as an activist for the Monastir Club, he does an excellent job of founding the Dibra Club Bashkimi ("Unity, Association") in December 1908 . He also organized the Dibra Congress of 23 July 1909, which was important for the Albanian national movement. At the end of June 1910, the Ottoman military, Turgut Pasha, described the sherif as a "Latin priest".

Hafiz Sherif was elected by the local population to teach the first Albanian-speaking school in Debre, which was founded on his initiative. Hafiz Sherif Langu saw the end of the Turkish Empire and set about organizing the armed uprising at the end of June 1912, which led to the liberation of Dibra from foreign rule.

He was elected together with Haxhi Vehbi Agolli in the first National Assembly at the Congress of Vlora . During the occupation of the Dibra and Elbasan areas by the Kingdom of Serbia , Sherif was arrested on the way to Vlora. After a while, the Serbian authorities were forced to release him again in the face of popular pressure.

He entered the association of Aqif Pasha Elbasani in Elbasan. They maintained links with the Provisional Government of Vlora and set about connecting the Albanian tribes of Dibra with the administration of Vlora. From the end of 1913 to 1917 he exercised the duty of kadi (judge) in those areas of Dibra that remained with Albania. He served as an imam and in some cases as a kadi from 1920 to 1938 . His Eminence posed a threat to the Yugoslav state . From 1938 to April 1941 he was chairman of the Ulema Council in Skopje . Seeing that his future activity was in jeopardy, he went to Tirana, where he was elected chairman of the Muslim Community of Albania . In 1943 he was a member of the National Assembly of Greater Albania (Kuvendi Kombetar) .

In January 1945 he was in the madrasa of Tirana by officials of the Communist arrested "people of Defense". He has been tried on charges of collaborating with the Balli Kombëtar and "sabotaging" the actions of the communist authorities. He defended himself without a lawyer during the trial and was sentenced to life in prison, which was later commuted to 25 years in prison. He was released in 1952 and died four years later.
