Vilayet Manastir

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Vilâyet Manastır ( Ottoman ولايت مناستر İA Vilāyet-i Manāstır ) was an Ottoman vilayet founded in 1874. The vilayet comprised areas in what is now eastern Albania , the southwest of the Republic of North Macedonia and northwestern Greece .

The capital of the province was the city of Manastır (today: Bitola ). It was divided (as of 1912) into the Sandschaks Monastır, Serfice (today: Servia ), Dibre (today: Debar ), Elbasan and Gorice (today: Korça ). The territorial existence of the Vilayets and its structure were variable. It was dissolved in 1877, but re-established in 1879. Until 1877 the Sanjak Üsküb (today: Skopje ) belonged to the Vilâyet, until 1875 the Sanjak İşkodra (today: Shkodra ) and until 1877 and again in the years 1880–1882 and 1884–1888 the Sanjak Prizrin (today: Prizren ). The Sanjak Elbasan was newly formed in 1889 and the Sanjak Serfice was added to the Vilayet in 1889 after the loss of Thessaly. It was dissolved after the first Balkan War in 1912 and divided between the Principality of Albania , the Kingdom of Greece and the Kingdom of Serbia .
