Vilayet Beirut
The Vilayet Beirut ( Ottoman ولاية بيروت, Turkish Beyrut Vilayeti ) was an administrative administrative unit (province, tr. Vilâyet ) of the Ottoman Empire . It was erected in 1888 from the coastal areas of the Vilayets of Syria to celebrate the new importance of the thriving capital, Beirut , which had seen significant growth in previous years. It was enclosed by the Vilayet Syria in the east, the Vilayet Aleppo in the north, the independent Sanjak Jerusalem in the south and the Mediterranean Sea in the west.
In the run-up to the First World War, the area was awarded to France in the Sykes-Picot Agreement in 1916. France eventually captured Turkish territory in that war. In 1920 the area was incorporated into the French League of Nations mandate for Syria and Lebanon and converted into the new state of Greater Lebanon .
