The Kosovo Vilayet ( Turkish Kosova Vilayeti , Albanian  Vilajeti i Kosovës , Serbian Косовски вилајет Kosovski Vilayet , Macedonian Покраина на Косово Pokraina na Kosovo ) was a Vilayet of the Ottoman Empire in the Balkan peninsula. The capital was Üsküp , today's Skopje.

history

The Vilayet Kosovo was created from the province of Prizren in Rumelia after an administrative reform in 1877 .

The borders of the province shifted when the Ottoman Empire - as a result of the Russo-Turkish War 1877–1878 and the Berlin Congress - lost territories to neighboring countries. After that, parts of the province of Kosovo - including the city of Monastir - were relocated to the province of Thessaloniki .

In 1878 the Sanjak Novi Pazar , a subdivision of the province of Kosovo, came under Austro-Hungarian military occupation, under which it remained until 1908. After the Balkan Wars of 1912 and 1913, the province was divided between Montenegro , Serbia , Albania and Bulgaria , and the divided areas were incorporated into the respective states.
