Berane ( Cyrillic Беране ) is a town with about 11,800 inhabitants in Montenegro .
geography
Berane is located in a basin on the river Lim , which is rich in fish , at the junction of the road to Andrijevica from the main road Bijelo Polje - Rožaje and has a small regional airport. history
The settlement was founded in 1862 as an Ottoman military camp by order of the Turkish general Hüseyin Avni Pasha . The place was long on the border between Montenegro and the Ottoman Empire and was therefore often the scene of violent and bloody battles. From 1946 to 1992 the city was called Ivangrad , named after Ivan Milutinović (1901-1944), a Montenegrin member of the Communist Party of Yugoslavia and a military leader in the fight of the partisans during the Second World War.
In the area, researchers discovered objects and skeletons that date from the Stone Age in the 1950s .
