Bijela ( Cyrillic Бијела , Italian La Bianca, San Pietro de Albis ) is a coastal town in the municipality of Herceg Novi , Montenegro . It is located northeast of Herceg Novi , on the Bay of Kotor , near the Verige Canal . The 2011 census showed a population of 3,725.
Bijela has been the location of the Bijela Adria shipyard since 1927 ( Montenegrin : Jadransko brodogradilište Bijela , Јадранско бродоградилиште Бијела), the largest maintenance and repair yard in Montenegro.
Pope Sixtus V came from a family that had its roots in the area of Bijela in the 16th century: As the chronicler Andrija Zmajević noted, Piergentile di Giacomo, who later became the father of the Pope, was born in the village of Bjelske Kruševice near Bijela. This later moved to Italy as a result of the Ottoman conquests in the Balkans.
In Bijela there is a men's soccer club called FK Bijela , which plays in the third Montenegrin soccer league ( Treća Crnogorska Liga ) in the 2012/13 season .
