Gusinje ( Cyrillic  Гусиње ; Albanian  Guci / Gucia ) is a city and large municipality in Montenegro , located in the historic area of the Sanjak of Novi Pazar at 925 m in the valley of the upper Ljuča ( Albanian  Luça ). The place is located near the Albanian border. Until 2014, Gusinje belonged to the large community of Plav , but since 2014 the town has formed its own large community with surrounding towns. Gusinje has about 1700 inhabitants.

The first mention of the place comes from 1330 as Gusino . From 1878 to 1913 Gusinje was de facto independent, as the city fathers did not want to recognize the Turkish or other ruling powers at the time. At the time, the city was one of the most populous cities in the region and was an important trading center. After Montenegro had raised territorial claims on Plav and Gusinje as a result of the Berlin Congress in 1878, troops of the League of Prizren under the leadership of the local ruler Ali Pascha Gucia occupied the city. In the Battle of Nokšić ( Bosnian : Boj na Nokšiću , Albanian  Nokshiq ) in December 1879 and January 1880, the Montenegrin army suffered two heavy defeats - also supported by Russian troops. The inhabitants of Gusinje were able to successfully prevent the area from being ceded to Montenegro until the collapse of the Ottoman Empire .

Gusinje is the starting point for numerous hikes in the Montenegrin Prokletije , which is protected here as a national park . The mountains begin just south of the village.
