Igalo

Igalo ( Cyrillic Игало ) is a small Montenegrin town west of Herceg Novi , which is the first to be reached via the E65 / E80 from Croatia or Dubrovnik . The name is of Greek origin and means coast or beach. As of the 2011 census, it had a population of 3,354. Igalo and Herceg Novi are only divided administratively, there is no visible separation between the two cities.

On the coast, the boulevard "Sem Danic", on which there are many small restaurants and cafés, connects the two cities. “Zanic”, the most famous beach of Igalos, is not located directly on site, but on the island of Mamula off the coast , which can be reached by motorboat in 20 minutes.

Igalo, located on the slopes of the Orjen Mountains, is regionally known for the "Dr. Simo Milošević" Institute for Physical Medicine , a Mediterranean spa bath that used to attract many tourists. Architect Aleksandar Djordjevic created this institute. It is one of the most unique hospitals and health resorts in the Balkans. It is known for its use of sand and healing mud from the seabed, which are said to have healing properties. Although the effects of the Yugoslav Wars initially limited Igalo's tourist attraction, it still remains a popular holiday destination for tourists from the surrounding region.

The former Yugoslav president and dictator Tito had his summer residence here, the Villa Galeb . The building was used for political meetings after his death, most recently for the Milošević - Tuđman meeting in September 1991.

population

In 2003 around 60% Serbs, 27% Montenegrins and around 2.5% Croats lived in Igalo.
