Sveti Stefan

Sveti Stefan is a small Adriatic - Island near Budva in Montenegro and its municipal area belonging. A short dam connects the small island, whose area is only 1.46 hectares , with the mainland. On the mainland opposite the island, the village of the same name has been growing up the slope with apartment houses, a few hotels and restaurants since the 1950s . The population of 411 (as of 2003) is divided into 256 Serbs, 109 Montenegrins, 6 Croatians and 40 others.

Sveti Stefan is particularly known for the picturesque fishing village of the same name with houses from the 15th century. There are several old churches on the island, including that of St. Stephen ( Sveti Stefan ), which gave the island its name. In the 1950s and 1960s the whole small village was converted into a hotel island with around 250 beds. The alleys, roofs and house facades have retained their original character. A casino was also part of the facility, which gave Sveti Stefan the name Adriatic Monaco . Many members of the high society , among them Sophia Loren , Sylvester Stallone and Claudia Schiffer , have already been guests in Sveti Stefan. Political figures such as Willy Brandt , Helmut Kohl and Silvio Berlusconi were also among the guests. In 1992, the former world chess champion Bobby Fischer played here after 20 years of abstinence against Boris Spasski , who was world champion himself from 1969 until he was defeated by Fischer in 1972. The competition can therefore be seen as a kind of revenge, which Fischer won again.

The island was leased from the state of Montenegro for 30 years by Amanresorts in 2007 and then renovated. In the summer of 2010 a gradual reopening began as Aman Sveti Stefan . When the work is complete, 53 suites will be available, some of them in a villa on land.
