Claudia Maria Schiffer (born August 25, 1970 in Rheinberg ) is a German model and actress .

Career

Schiffer grew up with three younger siblings as the daughter of the lawyer Heinrich Schiffer († 2007) and his wife Gudrun in Rheinberg on the Lower Rhine . She first attended the Catholic elementary school St. Peter, later the Amplonius-Gymnasium . As a child, she wanted to later become a lawyer in her father's office. In 1987 she abandoned her plans to study law after she was discovered by Michel Levaton, the managing director of the Metropolitan model agency , in the Checker’s disco in Düsseldorf .

Schiffer was then invited to Paris for test shots , which was followed by a series of photos taken by Ellen von Unwerth for Elle magazine . Schiffer first attracted attention with a photo series for the jeans brand Guess Jeans . She first stepped onto the catwalk (for Chanel ) in 1988 with the support of Karl Lagerfeld and graduated from high school in the same year. Lagerfeld himself referred to Schiffer as his muse and remained professionally connected to her until his death. Schiffer was on a Vogue front page for the first time in 1989, Herb Ritts photographed her for the October issue of Vogue UK, in May 1990 she first appeared on German Vogue and was then the best-known model alongside Tatjana Patitz and Nadja Auermann for ten years from Germany. In the years that followed, Schiffer graced over 1,000 front pages of the world's most famous magazines, including Marie Claire , Cosmopolitan , Harper's Bazaar , Playboy and Elle . She was the first model to be featured on the covers of Vanity Fair , the music magazine Rolling Stone and the prestigious New York Times .

Gunter Sachs showed her for his exhibition The Art is Female (2008) on a poster as Isadora Duncan and dedicated photographic works that were specially created to her in the Claudia Schiffer Room in the Museum of Fine Arts in Leipzig.

As an advertising star, she was exclusively under contract for Revlon , Pepsi , Ebel , L'Oréal , Citroën , H&M and Victoria's Secret in the mid to late 1990s . Most recently, she has worked for luxury brands such as Louis Vuitton , Dom Pérignon and Dolce & Gabbana .

Schiffer was on the catwalks in Paris, Milan and New York for all the major fashion houses . Her daily salary in 1995 was 25,000–75,000 DM.

Together with other top models of her generation, Cindy Crawford , Kate Moss , Naomi Campbell , Elle Macpherson and Christy Turlington , she founded the now closed Fashion Café in New York. Schiffer was also known by its refusal to " topless to be photographed." In 2010, shortly before the birth of her third child, she was very pregnant for the German edition of Vogue magazine . 1997 Schiffer first appeared in a larger role as an actress in front of the camera, after she had only a brief guest role in the 1994 comedy Richie Rich . She played the supporting female role of Susan in Abel Ferrara's film Black Out . In the thriller Against Suspicion , she played one of the bigger roles alongside Daniel Baldwin . In 2003 she appeared in a small role in the film Actually ... Love .

In 1995 she received her own talk show on RTL II under the title Claudia Schiffer - Close up , in which she conducted interviews with stars like Dennis Hopper . However, the show was canceled after only one episode.

In 2002 she had a supporting role in two episodes of the US sitcom Dharma & Greg .

Since the 1990s, she has appeared on almost every major television show worldwide, including Larry King Live , Late Show with David Letterman , Late Night with Conan O'Brien and Wetten, dass ..? .

On April 10, 2013, wrote Schiffer a contract for the ProSieben telecast Fashion Star , a talent show, it supports in the participating fashion designers in the role of a mentor. The show was broadcast weekly from October 9 to November 27, 2013.

Claudia Schiffer was engaged to the US magician David Copperfield for two years .

In May 2002 she married the British film producer and director Matthew Vaughn . Together they have three children, a boy and two girls. Her son was born on January 30, 2003, the first daughter on November 11, 2004. On May 14, 2010, she gave birth to her third child, a girl, in London.

She speaks German , English and French .

Schiffer's fortune is estimated at 200 million euros in August 2020.

Claudia Schiffer supported the “ Your voice against poverty” campaign by appearing in the campaign's television commercial. She is also a member of the UNICEF Arts and Entertainment Support Committee and appeared in a video for the aid organization for a global campaign against AIDS.

Her cousin Patrick Schiffer was chairman of the Pirate Party Germany from 2016 to 2017 .
