Cindy Crawford (model)
Cynthia Ann "Cindy" Crawford (born February 20, 1966 in DeKalb ) is an American model and actress . During the 1980s and 1990s she was one of the most popular supermodels.
Career
The start in the model business
Crawford also took part in the first event of the Elite Model Look , which took place in 1983 under the name Look of the Year in Acapulco , Mexico , which was used until 1995 . At the age of 17, she took second place in the election. She graduated from high school in 1984 and received a scholarship to study chemical engineering at Northwestern University . However, the increasing number of model orders left her little time, and so she dropped out of studies after three months to work full-time as a model. After working for the photographer Victor Skrebneski in Chicago , she moved to New York City in 1986 , where she signed a contract with the modeling agency Elite Model Management .
The rise to supermodel
Crawford devoted herself to her career in the fashion capital Manhattan and in 1987 she found her way into film and television. For example, she appeared in the opening credits of the American comedy film The Secret of My Success with Michael J. Fox . In July 1988, she posed naked in front of the lens of the photographer Herb Ritts for the men's and lifestyle magazine Playboy . In October 1998 she was again photographed by Ritts without a cover. From 1989 to 1997 she hosted the fashion show House of Style on the music channel MTV .
From 1990 Crawford achieved the final breakthrough. A series of photos on the streets of New York City for the British edition of the international fashion magazine Vogue , which was created in January 1990 by the German photographer Peter Lindbergh with the then best-known models Naomi Campbell , Linda Evangelista , Tatjana Patitz , Christy Turlington and Crawford was made.
That same year, Crawford and the other four models starred in the music video for George Michael's hit Freedom '90 . In 1991 she shot a commercial for US beverage maker Pepsi , which first aired during Super Bowl XXVI in January 1992. For the tenth anniversary, Pepsi made a remake of the clip with Crawford in 2002.
Not only did her marriage to actor Richard Gere , which lasted from 1991 to 1995, make headlines , but also her appearance together at the 1991 Academy Awards in Los Angeles . The red evening dress, designed by Italian fashion designer Gianni Versace , that she wore to the event had a huge impact on fashion, and many copies and fakes of the dress were made.
The Cindy Crawford brand also continued in the fitness videos with their personal trainer Radu Teodorescu . Cindy Crawford: Shape Your Body Workout was produced in 1992, Cindy Crawford: The Next Challenge Workout followed in 1993. Cindy Crawford: A New Dimension , produced in 2000 with fitness expert Kathy Kaehler , came onto the market shortly after the birth of their first child and was designed to help mothers get back in shape. In 2001 Crawford made another fitness video for children. Mini Muscles with Cindy Crawford and the Fit-wits was an animated production featuring the voices of Crawford and Teodorescu and the NBA - Basketball -Star Kobe Bryant .
After playing the lost love of Jon Bon Jovi in his music video Please Come Home for Christmas in 1994, she received a double nomination for the negative award Golden Raspberry on her debut as an actress - for worst newcomer as well as for worst female leading role in the US Action film Fair Game , in which she played a lawyer alongside William Baldwin . In 1995, according to Forbes magazine, with an estimated annual income of 6.9 million US dollars, she was the highest-paid model worldwide, ahead of the German Claudia Schiffer and the American Christy Turlington .
Until she left the catwalk in 2000, she worked with many designers. She ran on the catwalks for labels like Chanel , Versace , Dolce & Gabbana , Christian Dior , Calvin Klein , Ralph Lauren , Michael Kors , Todd Oldham , DKNY and Valentino . She has appeared on the covers of many magazines over 500 times, including Vogue , People , Harper's Bazaar , Elle , Cosmopolitan , Vanity Fair and Allure .
She also often landed high on the beauty lists: In 1998 she came fifth on the Playboy list of the “ 100 Sexiest Stars of the 20th Century ” and in 2002 was voted one of the 50 most beautiful people in the world by People magazine . In 2006 she was ranked 26th in the "Hot 100" issue of Maxim magazine and in 2013 was named one of the "100 Hottest Women of All Time" by Men's Health .
After the modeling career
After she officially announced the end of her professional career in 2000, Crawford decided to devote more time to her family, with whom she lived in Malibu . In May 1998 she married the entrepreneur Rande Gerber. Their son Presley Gerber was born in July 1999 and their daughter Kaia Gerber in September 2001 .
In 2002 she launched her first perfume fragrance, to which she gave her name. In 2005, she and the French cosmetics expert Jean-Louis Sebagh created a range of beauty products called Meaningful Beauty for the cosmetic and fitness product sales company Guthy-Renker, which is based in Santa Monica , a neighboring town in Malibu . Also in 2005 she presented a line of furniture manufactured by HM Richards under the name Cindy Crawford Home . In 2006 she signed a contract with the agency IMG Models and was featured on numerous magazine covers again in the following years.
The Cindy Crawford Style home design collection for the US department store chain JC Penney followed in 2009 . In the same year she presented her own shoe collection for the German shoe manufacturer Deichmann under the label Cindy Crawford Collection by 5th Avenue . In May 2011 she was featured on the cover of Vogue in Mexico. In the same year she worked alongside Naomi Campbell, Helena Christensen , Eva Herzigová and Yasmin LeBon, the wife of singer Simon Le Bon , in the remake of the video clip Girl Panic by Duran Duran . In 2015 she was part of the cast alongside Jessica Alba and Selena Gomez in the martial arts style music video Bad Blood by Taylor Swift .
On her 50th birthday in 2016, she collaborated with the author Katherine O'Leary to create her biography Becoming , in which she describes the path from little girl to top model. Shortly afterwards, Crawford and her daughter Kaia, now also a successful model, appeared together on the April cover of the Paris edition of Vogue . In September 2017 she appeared together with Claudia Schiffer, Naomi Campbell, Helena Christensen and Carla Bruni at the last fashion show of the Versace fashion show, which was a tribute to the late Gianni Versace . After parodying her 1992 Super Bowl spot with British comedian James Corden in 2016 , she shot the clip again on the occasion of Super Bowl LII in February 2018 with her son Presley, who also worked as a model.
Trivia
When Crawford was ten years old, her three-year-old brother Jeff died of leukemia . Since becoming a model, she has made childhood leukemia a focus of her charity work and uses the proceeds from her calendar to support medical leukemia research in the United States.
After Crawford had inspired him to write the lyrics, singer Prince wrote the song Cindy C in 1987. It appeared on his 1994 Black album . In addition to her appearances in films, video clips, and commercials, she has also had several minor supporting roles as a guest star in television series, in which she often plays herself.
As a schoolgirl, she was teased so much by the other children that she wanted to have it removed because of her mole above her upper lip. In the end, however, she decided against it because her mother warned her about a scar. The small beauty mark to the left of her mouth later became her most famous trademark.
