occupation

Studio 54 ( 54 , Fifty-Four ) is an American film drama by Mark Christopher from the year 1998 on the same night club in New York.

action

Shane O'Shea lives in suburban New York City in 1979 . One day he drives to Manhattan , where he discovers Studio 54 , which was trendy at the time. He got a temporary job as a bartender and met numerous celebrities, including Andy Warhol .

O'Shea becomes popular, he is called Shane 54 . He becomes especially close to his colleagues Anita and Greg Randazzo. It turns out that Greg is stealing from Steve Rubell, his employer.

O'Shea falls in love with Julie Black, who, however, disappoints him. The studio is targeted by tax investigators after Rubell implied in a television interview that he was committed to tax evasion . One day Anita sings on stage, while an elderly visitor passes out and dies during her performance. At the same time, the authorities search the studio's offices. Rubell is arrested and sentenced to 18 months in prison.

Black offers O'Shea friendship. The studio changes hands; the voiceover O'Shea says the scene became boring. The new owner allows Rubell to organize a party in the studio after his release.

Reviews

“On the foil of real circumstances, a maudlin and insignificant story develops, which does not understand how to convey the (time) spirit of those years and only strings lavish parties together as a permanent costume ball. The overwhelmed leading actor also contributes to the failure of the film. "

“Director Mark Christopher tried to bring the nightclub's fascinating party life back to life. But when the festivals were so sterile, lifeless and full of endless babble, one wonders how the club came to such fame. Mike Myers offers Steven Rubell a good performance as the owner of the studio and Salma Hayek is sure to be a feast for the eyes, but Ryan Phillippe stumbles through the area completely uninspired. background

The film was shot in Toronto , only a few scenes were shot in New York City . The production budget of the film was 9 million US dollars ; the re- shoots requested by Miramax increased the cost to $ 13 million. The film grossed almost 17 million US dollars in cinemas in the USA.

The world premiere took place on September 9, 1998 at the French Deauville Film Festival .

In cameos are other Sheryl Crow , Cindy Crawford , Heidi Klum , Donald Trump , Veronica Webb , Art Garfunkel , Peter Bogdanovich and Valerie Perrine to see.

Due to poor reviews of the original cut in test screenings, Executive Producer Harvey Weinstein pushed through extensive changes and re-shoots. The attempt was made to minimize the homosexual aspects of the plot and to portray the protagonist in a more likeable way. The resulting theatrical version was also released on DVD in Germany. In contrast, the American DVD contains a version that is 7 minutes longer, which was later also released on DVD in European countries such as Great Britain and the Netherlands (but not in Germany). In 2015 the director presented a reconstructed cut version corresponding to his original intentions at the 65th Berlinale under the title 54: The Director's Cut . In this version, the 25 minutes of footage from the post-shoots were almost completely removed and 36 minutes of footage from the original cut was reinserted. This film version is around 98 minutes long.

synchronization

The German synchronization was based on a dialogue book by Nadine Geist and directed by Frank Schaff on behalf of FFS Film- & Fernseh-Synchron GmbH in Berlin.
