Erika Alexander (born November 19, 1969 in Winslow , Arizona ) is an American actress . She was best known for her role as Maxine Shaw in the sitcom Living Single , for which she received several awards, including two NAACP Image Awards for Best Actress in a Series - Comedy .

Life

Erika Alexander is the daughter of pastor Robert Alexander and the teacher and children's book author Sammie Alexander and has five siblings.

Alexander had her theatrical breakthrough with her role as Pamela "Pam Cousin" Tucker on NBC sitcom The Bill Cosby Show . In 1990 she played alongside Whoopi Goldberg in the civil rights epic The Long Way , from 1993 to 1998 the sharp-tongued lawyer Maxine "Max" Shaw in the Fox sitcom Living Single .

Alexander's role as Pam Tucker had a positive impact on The Cosby Show : she played a girl who is sent to live with relatives when her grandmother falls ill. At first she feels that the strict rules mean that she cannot fit into family life, but she quickly learns that these rules are made of love. Pam is a simple girl who wants to go to college but doesn't really get the grades for it. She is mostly with her best friend, the researcher Charmainne, and her boyfriend Lance.

She briefly had a 1992 television series set in Jamaica called Going to Extremes . In this one-hour dramatic comedy, American medical students are trained on a tropical island.

In 2002, Alexander played the role of parole officer Dee Mulhern on Showtime's Street Time series . This ran for two seasons and gave her the opportunity to play a rougher, flawed, and layered character.

In international cinema, Alexander played the role of the Hidimbi in Peter Brook's Mahabharata adaptation . She also played a young plant in the TV miniseries Flora's Family .

She has actively Hillary Clinton promoted and toured it in 2008 during the election campaign of the Democratic Party with Chelsea Clinton on the college campus .

She has been married to artist and screenwriter Tony Puryear since 1997 .
