The Afro-American Odessa Cotter works in the household of the Thompson couple. After Rosa Parks was arrested in Montgomery , the bus boycott in Montgomery . Miriam Thompson offers Cotter to drive her in her private car.
Thompson first hides this help from her husband Norman. As soon as he finds out about the voluntary service, Miriam explains to him that it is part of her duties as a housewife. After the argument, she tells Cotter that she can no longer drive it, but later she does it again. She even signs up for the car service for other people, although Cotter warns her that this could socially brand Miriam. When Miriam announces to her husband that she would like to look for paid employment, another marital dispute ensues.
Norman Thompson attended the meeting of the Council White Citizens ( Citizens' Councils ). This organization decides to take action against the boycott participants. Norman warns his wife, who is in the African American group. The white racists want to drive out the African Americans, they are insulted and threatened. Cotter sings a song that the other boycott participants - including Miriam Thompson - are gradually singing. They hold hands and form a line. One racist after another goes away.
At the end of the film, the voiceover of Miriam Thompson's daughter says she understands how important it was for her mother to stand in line with the other people.
Reviews
Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times on March 22, 1991 that the film showed two women working at a turning point in American history. The way in which the characters of these women are shown with their individuality is fascinating. The film is " powerful " and " moving ", played well by the two main actresses.
The lexicon of international films wrote that the film was " sensitive and astute " and " convincing acting ".
Awards
Lexi Randall was nominated for the Young Artist Award in 1991 . The film was nominated for the 1992 Political Film Society Award for Human Rights . Whoopi Goldberg won the Image Award in 1993 .
