Steve Rubell
Steve Rubell (born December 2, 1943 in Brooklyn - † July 25, 1989 in New York ) was the founder of the New York nightclub Studio 54 .
The club, founded in 1977, was later closed for fraud and tax evasion, and Rubell was sentenced to three and a half years in prison, of which he served 13 months. After large consortia took over the club landscape, Rubell was used as a consultant. Studio 54 was closed in 1986.
Rubell died of AIDS on July 25, 1989 at the age of 45 ; he had known about his HIV infection since 1985.
Trivia
The time from 1979 to his arrest was dealt with relatively freely in the 1998 film Studio 54 . Steve Rubell was played by Mike Myers .
