Company history

Haute-couture dresses by Valentino in a retrospective

Valentino SpA was founded in Rome in 1960 by fashion designer Valentino Garavani (* 1932) and his business partner and temporary partner Giancarlo Giammetti , after Valentino ran into financial difficulties from 1959 when setting up his own company. Valentino had graduated from the Ecole de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne , a fashion school of the Paris Haute Couture Association, and from 1962, with the approval of the Haute Couture Association, produced women's fashion in the top price segment. Garavani was responsible for the company's creative design, Giammetti acted as managing director . The international success of the designer and the Valentino brand began in 1962 with a fashion show at the Pitti fashion fair in Florence .

From the very beginning, Valentino women's fashion stood for the highest level of elegance and exclusive style , with which the brand was very well received by prominent personalities. International stars and celebrities such as Audrey Hepburn , Elizabeth Taylor , Sophia Loren , Lady Diana , Queen Paola of Belgium , Farah Diba , Princess Margaret , Ornella Muti , Jacqueline Kennedy and Sharon Stone were avowed Valentino fans and friends of the designer in the following years. At the latest when Jackie Kennedy wore Valentino fashion in the USA from 1964, the Valentino brand and the designer were established in the international jet set . Valentino fashion was also featured on the red carpet at the annual Oscar awards in Hollywood .

Valentino preferred a simple, elegant design - preferably in the plain colors white, black or red. For this he created the radiant, strong 'Valentino red'. Distinguishing features for Valentino fashion were, for example, highly elegant evening gowns made of delicate fabrics in slim silhouettes, dragging flowing dresses , the use of high-quality furs as well as elaborate equipment with pearl and sequin embroidery , with golden lace or silver decorations . The fashion designer drew inspiration for his fashionable style and design from works of the visual arts. In 1990 he also founded the Accademia Valentino in Rome, which is dedicated to Italian art.

As early as the late 1960s, a capital 'V' became the official Valentino logo. From 1966 the Valentino house held its fashion shows as part of the Alta Moda shows in Rome. In 1969 a prêt-à-porter line for women was established, followed in 1972 by a line for men. From 1975 Valentino women's fashion was shown at the Paris fashion shows. In 1977 the company's first women's perfume came out under the name Valentino . Other perfumes did not follow until the 1990s; since then, numerous have appeared, including for men. In 2011 the women's perfume Valentina was launched, which was also launched in the following years in variations ( Assoluto , Blush , Pink etc.). Earlier fragrances of the house have been discontinued. In 2014 and 2015, Valentino launched the perfumes Uomo for men and Donna for women in rivet-design flacons, which were also supplemented with variation fragrances in the following years ( Intense , Acqua , Noir absolu etc.).

Over the years numerous secondary and secondary lines have been added to the Valentino portfolio in the fashion sector , most of which, however, were finally discontinued. The men's fashion was finally presented at the Milan Fashion Weeks. The Valentino brand had developed into an international fashion empire.

In 1998 Valentino sold his company to the Italian general goods group HdP ( Holding di Partecipazioni Industriali ), whose subsidiary GFT had been Valentino's license partner for years, for a sum of 270 million euros. Valentino also signed a five-year contract as a consultant and thus remained the company's chief designer. In 2001, however, the Valentino fashion brand slipped into the red. In 2002 the Italian Marzotto Group took over Valentino from HdP for 240 million euros (of which 204 million euros were liabilities ; the purchase price was only 36 million euros) and in 2005 founded the Valentino Fashion Group . Valentino's contract was extended for another five years. In October 2007, Valentino Garavani announced his withdrawal from the company in January 2008 after the British private equity firm Permira acquired a majority stake in the Valentino Fashion Group in mid-2007 and his contract as a designer for the Valentino brand had not been extended. The Haute Couture show in Paris in January 2008 was the last appearance by Valentino Garavani at the end of one of his fashion shows.

The Valentino Fashion Group is headquartered in Milan, the headquarters and the studio of the Valentino fashion house are located in Rome in the Palazzo Gabrielli-Mignanelli on Piazza di Spagna .

In spring 2008, Permira appointed the Italian fashion designer Alessandra Facchinetti - previously a designer at Miu Miu , Gucci and Moncler - as Valentino's successor, initiated extensive restructuring and discontinued several brands within the Valentino portfolio. Already in October 2008, after only two prêt-à-porter and one haute couture fashion show, Facchinetti, who had tried to go her own way with her creations, became Valentino through the design duo Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli - both of whom have been Valentino for many years - Employees and confidants - replaced. Valentino himself and Giammetti welcomed this personnel decision in the press. Since then, the collections have been continued in the style of the company founder. Valentino himself and Giancarlo Giammetti have since appeared at Valentino fashion shows as invited guests in the front row. The men's fashion line, which was somewhat neglected from 2007 onwards - Permira had discontinued all sub-collections of Valentino men's fashion except for the main line - was revived under Chiuri and Piccioli in 2010. In January and June 2012, the Valentino brand with its men's collection was a star guest at the Pitti Immagine fashion fair in Florence. Beginning in July 2016 changed Chiuri as creative director of women's fashion division to Dior . Since then Piccioli has been the sole chief designer at Valentino.

Mid-2012 bought the royal family of Qatar over the financial companies Mayhoola that the state fund Qatar Investment Authority (QIA) heard the Valentino Fashion Group, and thus the brand Valentino, from Permira for an estimated 700 million euros. The QIA has also been owned by the British high-end department store Harrods since 2010 and has interests in Tiffany & Co. and Louis Vuitton as well as Volkswagen etc.
