Iain Smith (born May 1, 1960 in Gateside ) is a Scottish politician and member of the Liberal Democrats .

Life

Smith attended Bell Baxter High School in Cupar . He then continued his education at Newcastle University, graduating with a bachelor's degree in politics and economics. From 1986 Smith worked as a regional politician in the Unitary Authority Fife and was between 1996 and 1999 chairman of the Liberal Democrats in Fife. In 1999 and 2000, Smith held the post of Parliamentary Secretary of the Liberal Democrats.

Political career

In the 1999 Scottish general election , Smith won the direct seat of the constituency of North East Fife and moved into the newly created Scottish Parliament . Smith won the only direct mandate for the Liberal Democrats in the electoral region of Mid Scotland and Fife . In the parliamentary elections in 2003 and 2007 he defended the constituency, but lost in the 2011 parliamentary elections the candidate of the Scottish National Party , Roderick Campbell . Since Smith was not listed as a candidate for the electoral region, he missed the re-entry into parliament.
