Surname

The name goes back to the Florentine Palazzo Pitti , in which between 1952 and 1982 the fashion shows of the event, initially only called Pitti , were held.

history

On February 12, 1951 organized Marquis Giovanni Battista Giorgini, a wealthy Tuscan businessman in his villa in Florence Torrigani the first post-war fashion show for women's fashion in Italy for the international press. Nowadays mostly forgotten designers like Fontana, Jole Veneziani, Fabiani, Simonetta, Germana Marucelli, Emilio Pucci , Noberasco, Carosa and Schuberth presented their models there. This date is considered to be the birth of the success story of 'Made in Italy' fashion. In 1952, the Sala Bianca of the Palazzo Pitti was chosen as the venue for the fashion fair, thus establishing the name of the fashion fair. In 1954, the Centro di Firenze per la moda italiana (CFMI) was founded to organize the fair. In the 1950s, Pitti was the largest fashion fair in Europe . In 1963 men's fashion was presented for the first time. However, by the late 1960s at the latest, the manufacturers of high-quality Italian designer fashion migrated to Rome or Paris , with the Italian Alta Moda division settling in Rome . Names like Gucci (with headquarters in Florence), Missoni , Valentino , Sarli, Roberto Cavalli or Krizia and many more. were once represented at the Pitti. From the end of the 1970s, the industrial city of Milan also developed into the center of Italian fashion.

In 1972 the first Pitti Uomo fashion show for menswear was held in Florence. In 1975 the trade fair for children's fashion was added with Pitti Bimbo , in 1977 with Pitti Filati an own fabric fair , in 1978 with Pitti Casa an event for home textiles. Much later, in 2004, a perfume fair was added with Pitti Fragranze . In 1983 the Centro Moda was founded as the organization for the operational business of the CFMI. In 1988 the trade fair was officially renamed Pitti Immagine . The Italian noun 'immagine' means something like 'image', 'image'. Since the early 1980s, the Pitti Immagine fairs have mainly been held on the grounds of the Fortezza da Basso .

Since the end of the 1980s, Milan has been the venue for the important fashion shows of Italian women's fashion (e.g. Giorgio Armani , Bottega Veneta , Etro , Fendi , Gianfranco Ferré , Gucci , Max Mara , Moschino , Prada , Versace and many more), together with the Milan Fashion Week international men's fashion (e.g. Alexander McQueen , Burberry , Calvin Klein , Dirk Bikkembergs , Dolce & Gabbana , Iceberg , Jil Sander , John Varvatos , Missoni, Moncler , Salvatore Ferragamo , Trussardi , Vivienne Westwood , Ermenegildo Zegna and many more). The fashion weeks there are organized by the Camera Nazionale della Moda , which was established in 1958 . International, aspiring men's fashion brands fall in love at Pitti Immagine in Florence (see section 'Exhibitors'). Occasionally the great designers - mostly as officially invited star guests of the Pitti, such as Jil Sander 2010 - show their men's fashion in Florence. Some established fashion brands premiered their men's fashion at Pitti Uomo: Vivienne Westwood (1990), D&G (1994), Prada Sport (1997), Zegna Sport (1999). The fair sees itself as an important presentation location for young, sometimes unconventional men's fashion labels. Since then, women's fashion has played a subordinate role in Florence and is presented at Pitti Immagine W (formerly Pitti Donna ). In June 2011 the Pitti Uomo 80 , the eightieth event of its kind since 1972, took place. Also in 2011, e-Pitti was launched, an online platform in which exhibitors can present themselves on the Internet even after the trade fair has ended .

Worldwide, the Milan Men's Fashion Weeks - together with the Pitti Immagine Uomo, which takes place shortly beforehand in Florence - are the most important venues for international men's fashion in front of the Paris, London and New York locations.
