Architecture and history

The palazzo that gave the square its name was built at the end of the 16th century by the architect Moschetti for the Gabrielli family as an initially two-storey building. In earlier times, the ancient Horti Luculliani, which existed from 63, were located here . In 1615, after the marriage of Maria Gabrielli and Giovanni Mignanelli, the building passed to the Mignanelli family. From 1834 to 1865 the house was rented to the Banca Romana . From 1870 the building was expanded by the architect Andrea Busiri Vici . The expansion was financed by the new owner, the Sacra Congregazione della Propaganda Fide (SCPF). The congregation set up a school and a printing house in the house.

Today the building serves as the headquarters of the Valentino fashion company. The entrepreneur Valentino Garavani also has private living space here.
