Danilovgrad ( Cyrillic Даниловград ) is a small town in the center of Montenegro . It is located in the wide and fertile valley of the Zeta River , about halfway between Nikšić and Podgorica . The city has 5208 inhabitants (2003) and is the central place of a large municipality (opština) with 16,523 citizens.
About 15 km in the direction of Nikšić is the most important Serbian Orthodox monastery Ostrog , which is visited annually by thousands and not only Orthodox believers.
Danilovgrad was founded in 1870 by Prince Nikola I of Montenegro . The newly built Zeta bridge here was intended to ensure a permanent connection between old Montenegro and the highlands. With the liberation of the cities of Nikšić and Podgorica, which came to Montenegro in 1878 and overshadowed the new founding as more populous centers, Danilovgrad never gained greater importance. The place was named after Nikolas predecessor Danilo of Montenegro, who had drafted the plan for the foundation of the city.
