Ostrog Monastery

The Ostrog Monastery ( Serbian - Cyrillic Манастир Острог ) in Montenegro is one of the most important monasteries of the Serbian Orthodox Church . The monastery is about 15 kilometers from Danilovgrad in the direction of Nikšić . It is located on the slope of the Prekornica Mountains to the Zeta River Plain ( Bjelopavlićko Plain ).

history

The monastery was founded in 1656 by the Metropolitan of Hum and Herzegovina , Vasilije Jovanović , who lived there until his death in 1671. This is where the body of St. Vasilije is kept. That is why it is visited by thousands of believers every year (with the exception of the 1940s).

During the Second World War , the Patriarch Gavrilo of Yugoslavia hid in the monastery from the advancing German occupation troops. The recently enthroned King Peter II also took refuge here for a short time. But the members of the Gestapo tracked down the hiding place in 1941 and took possession of it. They found parts of the Serbian state treasure , gold coins and stocks worth 375 million dinars, as well as food and the royal uniform.
