Vasilije Ostroški
Vasilije Ostroški ( Serbian - Cyrillic Василије Острошки ; German also Basilius von Ostrog ; * 1610 in Mrkonjići near Popovo Polje in Herzegovina ; † 1671 in the Ostrog Monastery ) is a Serbian saint of the Serbian Orthodox Church . His secular name was Stojan Jovanović. He is nicknamed 'miracle worker' (Serbian: чудотворац / čudotvorac).
He came from a poor background, his family had a modest livelihood, but was very pious. His later life became apparent at an early age. When he was grown enough for himself to be able to make decisions, he went to Trebinje to the monastery Uspenija Bogorodice to become a monk. He later became the bishop (episcope) of Zahumlje and Skender. He knew how to protect his entrusted Orthodox believers from the Ottomans and the missionary Catholics . After the Ottomans completely destroyed the Tvrdoš monastery, he moved to the Ostrog monastery. He died there in 1671.
His public holiday is April 29th, which is observed on May 12th according to the Gregorian calendar. His bones have the status of a relic and are said to have produced countless miracles since his death. They are located in Ostrog Monastery and the miracles they are said to have done cause tens of thousands of pilgrims every year, including autochthonous Muslims who know about these miracles through their ancestors, to visit the monastery on its holiday. In 1996 his bones took part in the Easter parade in Trebinje.
