The Church of St. Basil of Ostrog. ( Serbian : Црква Светог Василија Острошког Чудотворца / Crkva Svetog Vasilije Ostroškog Čudotvorca) is a Serbian Orthodox Church in the zentralbosnischen City Istočno Sarajevo .

The church is dedicated to St. Vasilije Ostroški the miracle worker . It is the parish church of the parish Kotorac in the dean's office of Sarajevo of the metropolitan Dabrobosnia of the Serbian Orthodox Church, its priest is Danilo Dangubić.

location

The church is located in the center of the Veljine district , in the Opština (municipality) Istočna Ilidža of the city of Istočno Sarajevo. The church is on Dabrobosanska ulica street . The rectory and a memorial to the fallen Serb soldiers from the Bosnian War are currently being built around the church.

History and architecture

Since the Bosnian War , the city and the church have been in the Republika Srpska , one of the two entities of the south-eastern European country. Shortly before the Yugoslav Wars in 1990, construction of the church began on the Crkvice site . The church was completed by 1992.

The church and nearby houses

During the Bosnian War, the church was on the border of the Serbian Republika Srpska and the Croatian-Muslim Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and thus on the front line. The church was badly damaged during the war.

After the war, the church was extensively renovated in 1998. On May 2, 1999, the most important members of the Serbian Orthodox Church met in the church under the leadership of the Serbian Patriarch Pavle at the time . On September 30, 2001 the church was consecrated anew by Metropolitan Nikolaj from Sarajevo. The church is built in the Serbian-Neo-Byzantine architectural style and has an iconostasis with icons , which is typical for Orthodox churches .

Renovation October 2015

The church of St. Vasilije Ostroški has been renovated since October 2015, the facade of the church tower is currently being renewed, and the roof panels are also being replaced. 74 holes from projectiles from the Bosnian War were found on the dome of the church tower, 98 on the dome above the nave. As a result of this damage, the facade and part of the interior were damaged by the weather.

The church also got three new church bells, which together weigh 1,050 kg (one 600, one 300, one 150 kg). The church bells were cast in the "Ligrap" foundry in the village of Belosavci in the Opština Topola in Serbia .

The renovations of the church dome and the roof are planned for spring 2016 and the whole church is to get a new facade. The cost of the complete renovation is 160,000 convertible marks (80,000 euros).
