Istočna Ilidža ( Serbian - Cyrillic Источна Илиџа , "East Ilidža"; until 2004 Srpska Ilidža ) is an association municipality (opština) in Bosnia and Herzegovina . It is located on both sides of the Željeznica south of Sarajevo Airport and was created during the Bosnian War as a split from the Ilidža municipality . Today it belongs to the city of Istočno Sarajevo in the Republika Srpska and lies directly on the entity border .
geography
The municipality of Istočna Ilidža is located on the southern edge of the Sarajevo basin at the foot of Mount Igman , about 10 kilometers by road from the city center. In the north, the community still has a share of the densely built-up urban area, while the south is already rural.
Neighboring municipalities are Ilidža in the west, Istočno Novo Sarajevo in the east and Trnovo (RS) in the south.
The five towns of Gornje Mladice, Kasindo, Krupac, Sarajevo-Dio Ilidža and Sarajevo-Dio Novi Grad belong to Istočna Ilidža.
history
During the siege of Sarajevo in the Bosnian War, the towns on the southern edge of the city were fiercely fought and badly damaged. The new municipality of Srpska Ilidža ("Serbian Ilidža") was formed from the districts of the Ilidža municipality held by the Vojska Republike Srpske . In 2004 the Bosnian Constitutional Court banned ethnic references in community names and renamed the community after its seat in Kasindo . However, the municipal council decided on the new name Istočna Ilidža .
population
At the 2013 census, the municipality had a total of 14,763 inhabitants. Of these, 93.2% described themselves as Serbs , 4.4% as Bosniaks and 1.1% as Croats . With the exception of the village of Kotorac, today's districts had a Serb majority even before the war.
Attractions
There are some Stećci on the territory of the municipality, especially near Krupac .
